Which MTB for under £1500..ish?

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new MTB and have roughly £1500 to spend. I often do a mixture of rides, varying from trail centres, quarrys and other general XC. I also sometimes like to use the bike on canal trails and into manchester city centre and salford quays, which involves riding on the roads. The bike i ride currently is a Specialized Enduro, which i think is too much for what i need. I want something which is a bit more of an all round bike, so i can ride on flat stuff and it wont feel too heavy to ride. But i also still want to be able to have a good go at going fast down hills. 
I'd also like to upgrade to a 29er, any thoughts?
Does anybody have any suggestions as to which bikes would be a good option?

Both are bad value, you simply need/want better forks for this money. And both are far from a downhill type of bike, you need to compromise (what you have is a good compromise really!)0

Both bikes are not very good value for the money. Look at canyon or vitus if you don't mind mail order, or giant and whyte if you do.0

thanks, i dont actually have a bike at the minute, the enduro is just borrowed from my dad. any specific suggestions? thanks again0

i may have over emphasised the downhill haha, the only downhill i do really is nothing more than you find at the trails centres, (red and black runs). i also forgot to mention i will be doing the cycle to work scheme for the £1000 and adding the rest too..0

It is illegal though, causes tax and ownership issues, have to be very careful with the new HMRC rules. Just a friendly warning!0

Who will own the bike in the event of a dispute then? You with your £500 or the C2W scheme with their £1000?
I wouldn't go there, better to get a 0% card and buy it outright from Pauls or similar.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
From the riding you are describing I would get a hardtail, better spec and less maintenance for your money. Depending on your penchant you could go for 'trail' geo and longer travel forks over an xc race style bike. whyte 901 or orange crush with change for a dropper post from you £1500 perhaps?0

I'd get an On-One Parkwood if I was thinking about a hardtail, and save a load of cash.0
