Thinking of upgrading suspension, but....

So I am looking for an upgrade from my Marzocchi MZ3's. Ive never upgraded my suspension before, is there anything I should look out for? Im looking to spend around £300, plus or minus £50.
I've seen some with a thick axle in the pictures.( like this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fox- ... -prod90169) Currently mine has a skewer through the hub, so will these not be compatible with mine?
Also what's with the tapered steerer tube? I'm sure mine isn't, perhaps it gets slightly thicker near the base of it.
Any suggestions for an XC fork within my price range? Are the ones I've linked above any good?
Any help would be appreciated!

You need standard quick release dropouts (9mm) and a straight un tapered 1 1/8th inch steerer.
