first ever 10 mile TT

  • Can a moderator please move this to amateur race, thanks,

Sadly due to illness I cannot race this week, and next Thursday evening I will be unable to race due to a scheduled hospital visit that day, the real kicker is the following week I am down to marshal but I'm hoping to swap that one !
  • Maybe I should have posted this in the race section, but just wanted to make an addition , I carried on improving little by little last year and my best time ended up being a 24: 32.
Last night I rode a 23:08 , really chuffed. I have also ridden 2 other club TT's this year (around 18 miles each) and taken a full 8 minutes from both of them !
Maybe I was not quite ready to race last year, either way I think I'm in for a good season.

Your improvements are other-worldly... seriously good stuff.
Most people that start with a 29 minutes, will end up after years of training doing a long 25... but going from 29 to 23 in one year only is stuff for the book of records...

I don't think it's *that* incredible if it's your first season, you can make a lot of progress then. When I started racing (or rather re-started after an 18-year hiatus) I did 29.00 in the April and had got it down to 24.24 by the August (albeit on a faster course and with clip on bars which I had just bought). I've never made anything like that kind of progress since.

Sounds like you've both progressed pretty quickly.

    Got any top training tips?

Ahhh! Clearly the key is more training, less internet foruming

Biggest gains when you're starting out come from knowing how to pace a ride better. Too many people go all out in the first few miles and limp home, needs to be a steadily increasing effort until you feel like you're going to vomit half a mile before the finish.

I've only done 1 TT and it follows that i did ok but there was room for improvement all round.

    1) i was doing a lot of climbing at the weekend after the TT so had my 52/36 chainset on which somewhat blunted my top end (not by much of course, but a little). I usually use a double... and should have kept that on.
    2) my 30 second Man was one of the clubs top riders last year and is still in good form. he passed me half way round the course!
    3) i pissed around with my garmin at the start, lost about 10 seconds just getting the thing to start!
    4) i also hadn't Recce'd the course.
5 i went off too fast on the first ascent and partially blew up.
    6) my position on the bike wasn't quite "barn door" but wasn't particularly aero.

those were the negatives, however when i got into a rhythm and pressed on I caught my 30 second man in front, and was on the verge of catching my minute man ( 6 seconds ahead). think the morale of my story was to be more prepared for the event, and to definitely understand the course better as it has several rises and falls which i could have gauged better. still i came in 9th of 17 and know there is a lot to come from me.

mre of the same tomorrow, and hopefully i'll break the 24:30 barrier.

I think you're deluding yourself if you think that a 52t cost you any time. At 120rpm the difference between 52x12 and 53x12 is only 0.8 mph which is worth about 1.5 seconds per mile, and that's assuming you rode a complete mile at 40mph.Props for having a go, you'll go under 24 before you know.

it sounds odd and probably is, but i prefer the feel of a 53 tooth. its very slightly tougher to push round and i actually enjoy the resistance. Weird considering its only one tooth! understand your point, but i did a windsor loop yesterday and the 53 just felt right!!!

    I know, I know...
  • Bit of a disappointment this week, very windy so going south was tough, I felt I was going well but alas not so, my time was 24:12 , I'm doing a 25 on Sunday but the weather looks equally rubbish, this is the G25/53 centered around Broadbridge Heath and primarily uses the A 24.
I'll post here how it goes, I've only ridden one 25 thus far and this course is far harder ( as in stiffer climbs)

  • Just going to let this thread fade and die now, its clearly served its purpose !
  • Having said that I'm pretty pleased with last Thursday's 10 , I squeezed in under 23 minutes .

Well done. Don't let the thread die, keeping posting progress!
  • Ok , will do, I'm riding a 25 tomorrow.
  • It was a PB but I really didn't feel that I rode well, never really got going, not sure what the problem was, this is only my 3rd attempt at this distance, still very much learning how to pace it I guess.

    G25/53 Time 1:03 dead.

This thread gives me some hope! Did my first ever yesterday, it was windy (although its an out and back course, so I'm not sure that matters), 26.56. Rubbish!

    Yes, it matters a lot.
  • I'll keep the results coming all the time there is an interest, just sing out and I'll let it die away.
Very bizarre this week though, there were no official times recorded due to stop watch failure !!.................. BOTH of them ! how odd.
I was running well but again came to a full stop at Washington due to traffic, ended up with a 23:33 ( unofficial, Strava only)

  • Had a crack at a 50 today, very tough course, G50/10, 2:10 was the time, I'm told that's not a bad benchmark for my first attempt at this distance.

    Yes, it matters a lot.

really makes a huge difference, i've tried TT'ing twice since in worse conditions ( second time whilst a bit under the weather) and my times were not great.

Got my first 2 up time trial tomorrow. should be chaos! :)
  • Good luck with that, I've entered a 4 up for September !
  • Evening 10 No 12 (PB 22:34)

  • Clearly this topic was getting a bit long winded so I stopped posting, the 17 week series has finished and I ended up 6th out of 24 qualifying riders, not bad I guess !

But, the reason I have posted here again is after the result of a 25 I did on Sunday, it P901/25, well known as one of the quicker local courses but it was quite a windy day,
I rode the course for the first time last year with a time of 1:05:37 , ofc my target was to beat that well and try to get near the hour, well I did, this years time was 58:39 , again very pleased with my progress.

    Great stuff.
I'm not really into TT's but enjoyed tracking your improvements :)
