I am looking for a route to Oxford and back,
Out via the chilterns if possible and back via the thames valley.
Anyone done anything similar, or anyone have a route that they wish to share.
I will be stopping at Zappi's cafe for lunch.

Depends how hardcore you want to be with the hills.
straight A40 from Uxbridge to past Stokenchurch is OK - traffic is not too bad thanks to the M40. IF you want to be more punchy there are infinite options on the lanes between AMersham/Beaconsfield and the Chiltern escarpment.
Then you need to be a bit creative on the back roads, eg the B480 from Watlington - Oxford. Careful as there was a fatality on this road recently but on balance I have found it OK.
Coming back through the Thames Valley - firstly I would be wary of the A4074 from Oxford to Reading, very fast single trakc A road that can be busy. I would go back on the B480 to Watlington then Henley - Maidenhead - Windsor - Staines - Chertsey - Shepperton - Kingston - Richmond.

Here's an alternative ride if you want a longer route! Officially it was the Steam Ride starting in Ealing, but my friends and I started from Richmond Park.
The route back was a bit hairy in the dark as we came back on the A40 for large sections and there aren't a lot of street lights!

Will's route is not bad but if you want a more rural & less punchy route from Great Missenden this is my favourite route from GM to Zappi's.

Eeek, I don't like routes which crossover, too confusing on the garmin breadcrumb trail. I inevitably take one of the wrong options.0 -

Hah, yeah it was not fun! I'm not the biggest fan of hills in general, so that one killed me.
