Ultegra 6700 Rear Derailleur Questions

Hi folks,

Quick couple of questions...

The barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur is threaded  (Not the bolt but the 'female' bit that the gear cable threads through). Is the only fix a replacement derailleur?

If so, do you know whether I'm likely to have an SS or GS (I suspect short)? It's a 10 speed compact (34/50), 11-28 cassette.

Thank you!

Are you sure ? there is no reason for it to be threaded where the cable sits ?
The cable would usually have a ferrule on the end and sit in a plain female socket.
Do you have the ferrule stuck in the adjuster and just the bare cable end ?
So many questions, post a good photo for a better answer :?

Thanks for responding topdude. Will struggle to post a photo today so I'll try a better explanation.

At the end of the gear cable outer and ferule that leads to the derailleur sits the metal barrel adjuster with a male threaded end (a bolt). That adjuster is covered first by a spring and then a plastic barrel adjuster.

The gear cable is fed through a hole in the main body of the rear derailleur. The barrel adjuster is screwed into this hole. The thread in this hole is threaded.

    Does that help?

OK, i understand what you are describing but what exactly is the problem ?
Is it that the thread in the body of the mech (which the adjuster screws into) is damaged ?

You could fit a helicoil if it's badly stripped.
You clould get the threads re-tapped if there's still a bit of thread left.
You could just use the barrel adjusters on your downtube if you have them?
You could fit an "inline" cable adjuster if you don't have downtube adjusters.

    Thanks both.

Yes, topdude, the thread in the body of the mech is damaged.

Styxd, will take a look at this options.
