Off to Plymouth on Weds. Anything I should look out for?

Apart from the robbing bar stewards at the City Council dishing out fines for straying into a bus lane. What else should I look out for in this delightful south western resort?

I think VTech may have started a whole new line in Cake Stop posts.

    I know it's not a serious post but as I'm from near there I have to direct the honourable gentleman to http://www.capn-jaspers.co.uk/

    Watch out for the ferry that takes you to roscoff.
    When you see it, jump aboard and a few hours later you will be in heaven (well not really but it is really nice)

    Things to Avoid;

    Janners.
    Getting into a fight on Union Street.
    Devonport.

    Things to Do;

    Eating Half a Yard of Hot Dog at Cap'n Jaspers.
    Check out the Beryl Cook paintings at the gallery in the Barbican.
    Have a night out on Union Street.
    Take the Torpoint ferry across the Tamar and visit Cornwall instead.

    Why would anyone want to go to Cornwall?

    True, Plymouth isn't that great to be honest, however, there's always Exeter....

    Inbred Janners with their yokel accents.

    Plymouth must be bad as the inhabitants seem to spend every weekend in their caravans at Challaborough Bay even though it's only 15 miles from home!

    That said I do like it around the Barbican and along the Hoe. The aquarium is OK but vastly over-priced.

    Good, so it seems that we're all agreed that Plymouth is a shite hole :wink:

    Plymouths a great place, the Hoe, Plymouth sound and its surrounds are really picturesque, shops around the Barbican, a great bike shop/café down there and easy access to Dartmoor, some great places to eat.
    COGs bikes in the city centre is great independent bike shop.

    Capt jaspers?? that's just a glorified McDonalds... who the heck would eat there?

    there is also a newly opened up Evans...ok maybe its a place to avoid then :)

    Be aware of the Devon/Corwall divide...

    It's worse than the North/South.

    There's only one reason for Plymouth, and that's the Bass in the Dolphin on the Hoe. Buy your fish and chips next door, then sit in the Dolphin eating them with the best pint of Bass you'll find.

    EDIT - not the Hoe, the Barbican. The Bass obviously went to my head.

    Glad to hear the Dolphin is still going. Do they still serve the beer from barrels behind the bar?

    It's got the theatre royal, Plymouth argyle, Plymouth Albion, running track, city college and university, drakes circus, hoe, barbican, bridge, railway, car ferry, cinemas, music venues

    Then again there is some interesting night time activity on Friday and Saturday in the town centre and union street, where everyone has a jolly good time...
