There is a proposed outdoor closed circuit in Derby. The funding is in place, just needs planning consent. The circuit is much needed - as a GoRide club we are currently getting turnouts of over 50 kids a week for rollers sessions in Winter and training on a bit of grass in Summer, and we are only one of two GoRide clubs in the city.

If anyone is able to take 5 minutes to support the circuit we would be grateful

Good luck with it. As a matter of interest, are there any objections to the application?

Done. How long does it take to build a circuit like that?

Yes there are objections - the land is a brownfield site and contaminated land that was designated a bird sanctuary hence the local wildlife group have coordinated a campaign nationally amongst similar groups. This resulted in the original plans being scaled back massively - which was disappointing but probably fair - the circuit not skirts round the side of the site on two sides - however they want the land to remain untouched.

I can see their point but British Cycling have said they will only fund the circuit in this site - so as far as I am aware it's this or nothing. It's the ideal site being next to the velodrome, connected to the best cycle network in the city and within walking distance of shops, cafes etc.

Just down the A50 from you and ride with Uttoxeter CC, filled in the form and sent out an E. Mail to the other riders to try and boost the numbers a bit. Good luck.

    Further update.
PRESS STATEMENT: Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has today started a legal challenge against Derby City Council’s decision to grant planning permission for a cycle track on The Sanctuary Local Nature Reserve.

Following legal advice, the Trust has written to the Council to formally request that it ceases the site clearance work that has already begun on The Sanctuary. If work doesn’t stop immediately, the Trust will apply for a court injunction requiring them to stop.

The letter also outlines the grounds on which the Trust will seek a judicial review of the planning committee’s decision to approve the track. Conservation Manager Tim Birch explained: “A judicial review is a court proceeding that looks at the legality of a decision made by a public body. We have been advised that we have grounds to seek such a review on two counts – the absence of a winter bird survey of the nature reserve, meaning that there is incomplete information about its wildlife, and the offer of a compensatory site at Alvaston Scrub, which is inappropriate and inadequate.

“This is such an important issue both locally and nationally that we felt we had to explore all options to protect The Sanctuary. Destruction of the wildlife habitat on this Local Nature Reserve sets a dangerous precedent that makes other local nature reserves in Derbyshire and around the country vulnerable to development. If Derby City Council is prepared to build on this LNR, which will be the next they line up for development? Our wildlife continues to decline and it is vital that we do all we can to protect our local nature reserves. “
  • Good luck with it. Since it's a brown field site (i.e. wasteland / ex industrial land) there shouldn't be a problem really so I guess it depends how official the nature reserve status is and the rarity of any animals that depend on it.
