Can someone compile a likely list - I'm getting a bit lost with who is regarded as first choice sprinters ie who the team supports in stages - there seems a lot around

    Meersman?
I had forgotten him. He's probably better than Viviani (who probably only got in my top 10 as I like him)

It depends whether we're talking about pure sprinters on a flat not too long stage. I think Rich's list covers those pretty well. You could consider Bos, Kristoff or perhaps Rojas (and maybe demote Matthews).

If you talk about sprinters uphill or after a challenging stage or a classic, you get a different list, with people like Meersman, Sagan at 1, Degenkolb a bit higher, Rojas and Boonen definitely in there, etc.

Pretty much on the money, Rich (as usual), tho I might be tempted to swap Bouhanni and Viviani. Oh, and I'd be a little kinder to Greipel - he's not quite on the level of Cav and Kittel, but praps he deserves a "4 1/2 stars"

    Europcar - Coquard
That's another one I forgot. I'd have him in the top ten - I rate him. A man on the rise.

I think Ferrari, Bennati and Ciolek deserve mentions.

Plus I'd have just two categories (i) Cavendish, Greipel and Kittel (ii) All the other names that have been mentioned e.g. I think Gerrans has a good chance against Sagan, but Sagan has little chance against the big three.

Is Petacchi ever likely to be in the mix again?

Well the title of the thread includes the phrase "right now"... I'd say Boonen deserves a place and Cav out. Farrar, Boassen Hagen and Goss can continue to play marbles in the corner of the playground.

  • its quite a hard one isn't it, not many teams dedicate a team to their sprinter because if they are up against Cav, Kittle and or Griepel they arn't going to be in the mix. Greenedge have alot of guys who you would back if the three big names weren't there but none that you would expect to challenge the 3

Coming to this thread late, I was amazed that he seemed to have been almost forgotten.
Been on my radar, via the track, for some time.
Last year was no surprise to me.
    Definitely one to watch.

How about Danny van Poppel? Only 20, this season...

Speaking of sprinters, It pains me to say that I no longer think Cav is number one. Third possibly, behind Kittel and Greipel. Hope I am wrong but he was soundly beaten in the Tour last year and that has never happened before.

Yep, joins OGE in August... looks a very exciting talent. Might be the end of Goss (at OGE at least)

Greipel certainly isn't better than Cavendish, but Kittel probably is - at the moment.

Longer term, Cavendish will inevitably find the wins dropping off at some point in his career, and last year may prove to be the point that the decline started: but Cavendish is starting from a far higher peak than most. I wouldn't be writing him off just yet.

Sprinters can have a very long life, Petacchi and Cipolinni for example.
