After getting home I began bolting on odds and sods that were laying around

Shimano Hone front mech

SRAM 9spd rear mech, SRAM PC951 chain + X-7 shifter

Ended up with this freezing cold and shaky photo.

Before buying a BB and crankset I'm unsure whether to do away with the front mech and go 1x9, but I have no money... So it's not going anywhere yet anyway.

Chain device is on back order at LBS so won't arrive until next week! :( Came home with a sunrace BB and did a mock-up to make sure the cranks were a good fit. Itching to get out on it now!

That is a massively long fork for the handjob frame.....

  • I'm told the max travel for a HJ is 130mm, but the bike seems to handle these brilliantly so far

400mm Richey seatpost (seat angle has been changed)
    Shimano M615 brakes up front

Shorter stem, wider bars and new paint job in a couple of weeks (quite fancy Volkswagen Cherry Red) Squeezing in one more 30 miler tomorrow before it's stripped down

A new camera would go down nicely aswell...

I think its recommended for 100-120 with 130 max but I have only ever run mine at 115 max and I found it too slack at that with a very wandering front end.

Personally I find that when run at 100 its a wicked fun, fast handling ride, when I turn my u turns to 115 its good downhill but not so good as a mile eating machine.

Just watch the 150 isn't stressing the welds too much....

I always thought half an inch of weld could carry half a tonne? Can the extra 30mm really compromise the steel that much?

Well the max travel thing is there for some reason....do you not find it a handful uphill though with that fork?

You have a total mass of circa 100-110Kg (rider+kit+bike-front wheel wait) travelling downhill at upto 30mph and the front wheel hitting obects that try and force it back (Instantaneous G forces will be close to 1G - any more and you'll sail over the bars), that wheel is centred on a long lever arm (the forks - for 150mm typically 21" ish) which is supported over a relatively short headtube (typically about 5")......you can get some quite large forces involved (about 4 times the impact force on the front wheel), both trying to elongate the top tube/weld or buckle the downtube - in fact on that fag packet calc, just under 1/2 tonne. Still it's your face!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I have had some extra advice from Steve at Cove and he agrees that it's not wise to constantly run the forks at max travel so I'll adjust them down when I refit them. I will at least have a use for all 150mm of travel on the next project 8)

For now at least, it's back! Hoping to get some hardware bolted to it this weekend including a new shorter 70mm raceface stem.
