avid fans input required

Well my avid 5 brake pads have just about bitten the dust, what pads do you folks recommend to use, as the avid ones don't seem to last that long.

    I seem to recall stock pads being organic (don't last long). Sintered are far, far better for longevity.

    Superstar pads are well rated and a very good price, you can choose between organic or sintered. I've got some for my BB7s, but haven't had to fit them yet. After the adjustment this weekend I don't think it will be long though.
  • Yep, Superstar Organics. Work lovely on my Boardman CX, both when I had BB5's and now in the BB7's.

    Not heard of them, though I had a quick look and they are the same price as an organic set from Superstar Components.

    I use Superstar pads in my Avids (and my XTs). They're cheap. I don't find them outstanding performance wise but they do the job. Organics lasted longer than the stock Avid pads but I generally use sintered.

    Disco Brakes are an alternative, but I stopped using them because they shrink wrap the packet which makes it difficult to get the new spring out without damaging it. Superstar come in a card backed plastic tray thingy.

    About 2000 miles ago I put some Baradine Sintered pads on my BB5s. I only got 2500 miles out of the standard Avid pads. Baradine pads are cheap, stop well enough and there's still loads of material left. On the down side, last time I checked them for wear, the inboard pads (front and back) had become seized to the caliper so maybe fit them with copperslip on the back side of the pad to reduce this. My rear brake caliper may need a rebuild as I can't seem to adjust it with fingers and the Torx key is slipping and just chewing up the bolt. Note to self, check this more regularly.

    I'm running equivalent pads on my MTB (Avid Juicy 5) but it doesn't get anywhere near as many miles as the road bike, shame I cant run hydraulics on the road yet.
    I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    due to the pads disappearing to non-existence, I had to buy the standard avids, but will see nearer the time of these wearing out to see if I can get hold of the superstar pads (out of stock when I checked )
    That's really weird. The only issue I ever had with BB7's was that I had trouble getting the pads *out* as the retaining clip was so tight; needed a good pair of pliers on the sticking-out tab and then a good tug. It was also quite hard to get them back in again; are you confident that they were fully inserted in the first place, and that the retaining clip isn't damaged? (With the pads out it's easy enough to remove the clip from the other side of the caliper and check it visually.)

  • yeah the rear ones wear near enough bare metal, the front ones weren't to bad when I took them out, so kept them as spares.
