Fisticuffs

Interesting story from the Tour de San Luis: on Wednesday somewhere halfway, Walter Perez started pushing Kenny Dehaes out of position, they had a bit of an argument, ending in Perez hitting Dehaes in the face, giving him a black eye. Dehaes wanted to officially complain to the jury, but his DS Mario Aerts didn't let him, as it would mean losing friends in the Argentinian peloton for the rest of the Tour....

Anyway, reason for Sporza to give a nice overview of some fights in the peloton. Enjoy

    Cheers.
Though it does raise the question if any cyclist has been able to swing a half-decent punch since Hinault?

The first Vuelta one always makes me laugh. It's probably what I would look like .
  • I guess I am incorrect in this but I thought any rider who assaults another rider automatically loses his licence and basically ends his career. What does the race rulebook say on punching another rider?

Hopefully punch-ups are not going to be a future trend in the peloton.

As for Cipollini in that video, throwing bottles at the motorbike rider because he interrupted his little chat with the directeur sportif, he is a bloody disgrace.

    DD.

Not condoning this at all, but career-ending would be a bit harsh in most instances, surely?
Hasn't happened to riders clearly attacking/retaliating that I can think of - most serious is DQing that I can remember.
    eg Renshaw's headbutts

If you think that's bad don't ever move to Noord Holland, TV standard Vlaams is like listening to the most beautiful Italian compared with the Nederlands of Noord Holland shopkeepers.

To be fair all those scary looking g's and ij's and double vowels aren't that bad really, or maybe I've just gone native.

Anyway on the topic of fisticuffs wasn't there an incident last year in some Belgian race (I think it was Belgian, or it might even have been the blessed Eneco Tour :D ), I'm sure someone posted a video on here?

I'm thinking that it would be cool if "handgermeen brodelijk" means something like handbags at dawn, but I'm sure it doesn't

Hinault and Pascal Jules were both handy. There was a story about Jules passing a pair of joggers one of whom made a comment about "druggy cyclists", apparently Pascal wheeled round and sorted them both out.

Allegedly there was a Sheffield training run some time in the 1980's involving some well known names that ended up with a driver being put through his own windscreen...allegedly.

Back in the day, Raphaël Géminiani was all tooled up:
"While one of them would be pushing you [on a climb], two others would in fact be punching me in the back. Well, enough of that: I took of my pump and, v'lan, v'lan, I caught the guy on the right in the gums. Five teeth, he lost! He cried like a baby that he was bleeding so much."

Plus there's a photo of Jan Raas lamping a photographer during the Tour of Flanders

No mention so far here of Vladimir Belli – dq-ed after the 14th stage of the 2001 Giro, when in 3rd place in the GC, for punching a spectator who he felt had encroached too much into his path. Belli finished second on the stage but was disqualified that evening, because of the punch.

See it as it happens at 51-12, and again in slo-mo at 51-25:

And then there’s Bart Wellens in the last lap of the 2006 Druivencross, which the Belgians call the ‘moeder van alle crossen’ (mother of all cross races), live at 1-02, slo-mo repeat at 1-09:

Supposedly the spectator, at whom Wellens kicks out, had thrown mud and beer at Wellens during earlier laps and presumably Wellens's victory wasn’t taken away from him because of those ‘extenuating circumstances’.

The best bit about that was the spectator Belli hit turned out to be Gilberto Simoni's cousin.

Where/when/who was the bike wheel attack? That was a good'un. "I'll just wallop him with my wheel..."

The Irish v Britain battle between Kelly, Roche, Kimmage and Early and the British pros in 1987 at the three criteriums held in Dublin, Wexford and Cork was pretty good. The sprint in Wexford between Kelly and Chris Lillywhite could easily have ended in a serious bout of fisticuffs. Kelly managed to squeeze through an every-tightening gap between Lillywhite and the barriers. No fists were used but shoulders were liberally deployed. A real rip-roaring sprint.
