Stupid question... Barrel adjuster installation

Hey,
My touring bike has never had a barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur (despite thousands of miles, it hasn't actually needed adjustment - maybe because of the bar end shifters? My STI's need adjusting much more often). I bought one, and have just gone to install it. Thing is, I assumed it would screw into the derailleur(a Shimano Deore). But, it doesn't seem to.
So, how do I attach it to the derailleur?

If it hasn't got a barrel adjuster what is there instead? Every rear mech I have had in 30 years has had one.
Just seen (after a web search) that Deore rear mechs don't always have one! In which case you will have to use the barrel adjuster on the frame downtube.0 -
I'd assume if you've bought a barrel adjuster it's either designed to screw into the stop on the downtube, or it's an inline job and you can insert it anywhere in the outer cable run. The adjuster at the rear mech is usually part of the mech, not a separate item (though you can buy them as spares)0

Yes barrel adjuster should fit into that metal loop where you appear to have just removed the gear cable outer from. Check the inside of that loop to see if it is threaded - it needs to be to accept and operate a standard barrel adjuster.
If it's not threaded then I'm not sure you will be able to mount the adjuster effectively in that position.
Other option might be to install an in-liner barrel adjuster eg

You could always tap a thread if it has no thread and just buy the right size adjuster on line ,ebay for example.
I tap threads into my Red Mech's , the adjusters are a bit porky.0 -
Tapping a thread should be reserved for the last desperate measure as that part of the RD is not reinforced to take a thread.
Instead, look for alternatives:
The Jagwire Rocket II (or similar) can be used either at the shifter end, the frame cablestop (if there is enough clearance) or at the RD end.
The inline adjuster can be used at any point along the outer housing but it is customary to install it near the shifter end.0 -

I wanted a barrel adjuster on the mech as I find it easier to adjust. However, there is one further up the frame. But it's completely stuck, won't move at all. ANy tips?

Squirt it with gt85 or some kind of penetrating oil.0

On mine you have to pull them upwards / away from the stop a bit before they'll turn. They have a spring loaded notchy feel to them; it's probably what stops them unscrewing on their own.
I do remove, clean, regrease and reinstall them periodically though; I'm aware that with an alloy frame there's a chance they'll corrode and become irreparably stuck otherwise.0 -
I find it helps if I make sure the cable is as slack as possible (smallest sprocket) before I try to change the cable tension with the barrel adjusters. It's very hard to turn them otherwise.0

Unscrew out of frame, then you will be able to get at it easier. You can get a full turn without the frame being in the way0
