Hi All,
first post on here. After looking at some peoples new rides i thought i would share my current build. Im building a trail bike to replace my 2010 Commencal Meta 55. The aim is as lightweight as possible incorporating as much 'cool' new tech as i can while keeping the cost down. I'm on a budget of around £1200 so figured i would get more for my money if i built it up myself from bits, buying from sales and second hand etc.
I got a 2011 Trek Remedy Frame with shock and a few peripherals:
Some Easton Haven wheels and float Evolution 150mm fork:
And with the Nobby Nic tyres, NS Pedals, XT cassette and XT Shaodw+ Rear Mech:
This is where i am at so far.
I have a few bits to get. Got some Renthal Fat bar lite's for xmas and looking at a set of Shimano XT disc brakes. Seatpost and sadle then good to ride. is really light so far, no scales but about half the weight of my DH bike lol!
Open to ideas, suggestions and critique. The build so far is at £1100, done the work myself so no LBS charges.

Looks good that dude.. I want to get a good xc full suspensions frame, as I cant afford two bikes.. but all the parts on mine would work well but really stuck with frame choice, so let me know how you get on with this!!0

Thanks guys. I chose the remedy frame mainly because it has alot of the standards i wanted. I wanted 142/12mm rear axle, tapered steerer and ISCG tabs. It helps that its light, 150mm travel and i got it pretty darn cheap.
I honestly couldnt give you figures for weight as i havent weighed it yet, just feels really light!!
Other frames i considered were:
- Transition Bandit
- Trek Fuel EX
- Polygon
- Mondraker Foxy
In the end it came down to cost as this is a low cost build. But im very happy with the frame, only two rubs on it, looks almost new. Was gonna get it sprayed til i saw that it didnt need it.0 -
Shaping up to be a cracking bike! Always liked the Remedy, and Havens!

I guess you would call it a Trail/AM bike.

A RF Narrow/Wide would negate the need for the chain guide. Save you some more weight.
So you're saying go for the heavier brakes, then save the weight on the chain device...?
I'd get the XTs and a RF Narrow/Wide ring.0 -

I have just ordered some Shimano XT brakes as they are on sale at CRC so got a good deal IMO. Also an XTR 180mm front post adaptor.
I checked out the narrow wide ring you suggest, looks great and the reviews are incredible. I was under the impression you needed XX1 or X01 to run narrow wide but it seems like it works with any drivetrain? I do have the super narrwo chain though will that matter?
Any suggestions on rotors? Are the icetech ones going to be heavier and possibly a bit of overkill?
160 and 180mm?

Will work with any clutch mech (and some say without). Narrow - ie 10 speed- chain needed.0 -
This is shaping up to be a lovely bike. I really like the way Treks ride and feel. Yeah nice one, the raceface one is £45 so that saves a tenner and they do it in gold!
Just found a minor issue in that one of the bolts that hold the crank arm on is totally rounded and mangled so not sure how im gonna get it out in order to get the chain guide off. Taken the shock off as it needs a service.
The service from Mojo is £127, do you think its worth having a go myself? I'm an engineer by trade (electronics admittedly) so like to think I can learn most things myself. Have taught myself all other aspects of bike maintenance. Sounds pretty darn squeaky and squelchy though.0 -

You can do a air can service fairly easily. If it needs the damper rebuilding try loco tuning or tftuned.0 -

brake reference was in terms of cost vs performance
i suspect the chain device prob weighs more than the difference between the brakes (although i dont really care either way)0 -
Managed to find a company who will do a full service for £70 which is a bit more reasonable so thats off in the post.
Picked up some grips woth gold lock ons, gold rotor bolts and gotl chainring bolts for £13 too which was a great barg!0 -

Few new bits arrived now.
Unfortunately the seatpost seems too big although I ordered 31.6mm as specified.
Perhaps they sent the wrong one but its already in the post returned.

Update.
Spent some time today fitting bars, gear shifter and brakes. Not finished but getting there. Once I get the shock back and the seat post and saddle arrives should be good to actually ride the thing. Hopefully first few days of the new year.

Here is an update.
I took the bike out on its first proper little ride today. Wish I hadn't because of the gale force winds but that's another story.
Bike is rideable, few tweaks needed such as shortening the brake hoses and setting up the suspension better but other than that it rides well and I'm happy with it.

New grips ordered as the superstar ones were a bit fat for my liking and giving me more arm pump than i am used to.
Ordered some rufian thin grips in white.
Also got a one-up 42t cassette adaptor on order but that wont arrive til end of February and ill pair it with a 34t Raceface N/W ring.
I'm really happy with the tyres. Heard a couple of sneers about the pacestar compound but i have found it to be great. And that's compared to a high roller/minion combo i had before.0 -
got the Rufian ODI thin grips on and its suprising how much more comfortable it is on the descents.
Not worth a picture really.

Hi All,
I have an update on my Trek Remedy.
After a long summer of riding this bike consistently around 3 times a week it was really starting to feel worn, all manner of squeaks and creaks could be heard and i felt it needed a bit of an overhaul.
I was having a bit of a love hate relationship with the bike, sometimes it was great and then alot of the time it decided to dump me on the floor in a heap, which im still suffering for now. In the end it cane down to my inability to get airborne on the thing so after some time learning proper technique i have learned to love this bike. Its not particularly slack so i cant just muscle it down everything and the evolution fox 32 really let it down but i could ride it all day and have alot of fun on it. It served me remarkably well on a number of long rides.
So i stripped the frame down ready for some new bearings and figured ill spray it at teh same time.
The frame has been powdercoated, new bearings throughout, new Headset bearings and new BB. Also invested in some RS Pikes. Few other items such as grips, pedals etc are gonna go on but here is the picture of it so far.
Ill update as i finish the build, will be doing cables this evening.0 -

Cheers. I repsrayed a couple of bits and trimmed all the hoses down last night so ill stick another picture up this evening of my progress. Nothing is going back on without a deep clean or respray. it wont stay clean and shiny for long but nice to have it looking fresh!0

OK so i have finally got the bike all together and taken it on a couple of rides this weekend.
So very very impressed with the pike so far, supple yet so stiff and strong. Brakes need a bleed and a couple other tweaks but very happy with th beast now.
Went to ashton court and leight woods bristol which wasnt great tbh and then for a ride around cleeve hill in cheltenham. Needs a proper test really tbh.
