OK here goes, but first i need to tell you a bit about myself ... I'm 51yrs old, 5ft 10 & weigh approx 12st. I've never smoked and I was diagnosed 3yrs ago with stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (kcd) also known as Renals disease.

My ultimate goal is to get back fit so i can restart one of my biggest passions in life .... Motocross!

I started riding a mtb (Focus Black Forest) at the begginning of December. I've started off slowly, riding two times a week, where i'm now at the point were i can now do a 15mile ride along the canal albeit its taking me 2hrs. I'm using a heart rate monitor and trying to keep my beats between 145 and 155.

I ride alone at the moment while my confidence is low so I'm a bit reluctant to go on rides or join a club. Surprisingly, i'm enjoying it alot more than i thought i would an even get abit of a buzz

Any advice you can give me would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

  • Hi and welcome, IMO I'd keep at what your doing and maybe add some hills in your ride outs, that will get your lungs and legs going. Or you could find a decent hill and start of slowly riding up it then gradually build yo the pace every time you do it. Good luck at whatever you do.

PS. Your username looks like it says pornstar.

There are mountain bike trail centres across the country which are good for getting more into mountain biking. Also look for forestry land, unclassified roads and bridle ways. If you get even braver you can try places like Edale, the long mynd in your area which would give you a serious workout.

Google maps satellite view is very handy for finding trails. Look up where local mountain bike clubs ride from and there should be plenty of trails nearby.

Best advice anyone can give is - ride your bike. Don't worry about your times, joining a club, I would even say ditch the heart rate monitor, just get out there, ride your bike, enjoy it.

    Morning!

Good plan, good goal I think.

A question though - what has made you stick on that heart rate for your sessions?

I tend to find that if you just get out on your bike for this year, you will gather a load of fitness, then if you want to you can start working on zone training. However, I know so many people who have been put off training by zones, so beware!
    Insert bike here:
  • Because of the CKD mainly,

CKD effects your kidneys and blood pressure which thankfully is now under control through dailly medication, but it is also the start of heart disease so over doing it is something i'm always aware of, the last thing i want and to be honest i'm scared off, is a heart attack.
My wife would probably say i'm last person you would think of that would get CKD as i've always been conscious of my diet, dont smoke or drink and always kept myself pretty fit by going to the gym, motocross and thai boxing, but that all stopped 3 or 4 yrs ago when i was diagnosed.
But it also does'nt help by being daft as a brush thinking your still 20
