Yep, was a decent hour of telly. Liked seeing the bike and gearing Rourke had set up for him.

  • An interesting programme, good to see some science and equations in there!

Though the lab testing brought on some nasty flashbacks of hours of testing on that ergo bike!

Is there a Strava segment on Pendine Sands?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Guy riding into the back of the truck at 100mph and keeping control showed some nerve, many would have lost-it and "rag-dolled" down the beach
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Great programme. Training tips from the lovely Laura and due respect to Leggro too - setting his record behind a speeding Rover. Found myself looking at the Rourke website last night, which could prove expensive!
  • Amazed he did it really, when I saw he was going to attempt the record on sand I thought 'no way'

You only have to look at his crashes at the Isle of Man TT and NW200 to know what his balls are made of.
  • I can remember Dave let Grys doing it. Wish they'd had a bit more input from him. Iirc he did it behind a modified dragster on an airstrip.
  • I was watching the 2011 TT about 200 metres from his back breaking crash. So pleased to see him making a full recovery.

Proper geezer, and a half decent roadie too.

Legro's record was behind a Rover with a fairing on an unopened stretch of motorway (Wikipedia says M42), he's on Veloriders if you want to ask him about it - he seemed well impressed with Guy Martin.

What gets me though is almost 30 years of technology, computer design, sports science and such like for only a 3 mph improvement. I'd love to see a specialist cyclist (Hoy, Wiggins, Tony Martin et al) have a go.

Fair play to Guy though. That's some balls.

I suppose the technology has enabled someone who isn't a pro cyclist to beat it. The specialist could probably has the potential to go faster due to their athleticism, but would they have the balls?

I don't think the show has the budget to push the boundaries of what is possible. It's certainly not a patch on the set up used for the 166mph world record. I imagine the producers knew it would be reasonably easy to achieve but impressive nonetheless.

I think they'd have the balls - after all, Cav is willing to go elbow to elbow with other sprinters at 40+mph or down a mountain pass at 60+ with only a cycle helmet and lycra to protect him in a crash. Their team bosses would never let them take such a needless risk, though.

Would the speed been a lot higher on Tarmac than the sand I think so ......still got some balls doing it basically blind from fogging up and in a sand storm

If it was done on tarmac like the original record rather than sand it'd have been a lot easier.

Didn't realise Orange made road bikes. Never seen or heard mention of them.

Would be interesting to see how Guy fared in a road race or time trial...

Looking at their website it appears that they only made 100 of them. Thank **** for that!

  • Looked difficult enough on tarmac but thought the idea of doing it on sand was completely insane! Shows that wide tyres are fast, mind ;)

It wasn't the width of the tyres that concerned me, it was that I don't remember seeing a speed rating on any cycle tyres I've bought!!

  • Here's a question I can't seem to find the answer to - why was the bike fitted with brakes? Aren't they sort of redundant for this kind of riding, or is it in the rules? Would they even be effective at 100+mph?

    Fixed wheel you mean?

I didn't realise it was fixed.

By the looks of it they used a rear hub with left side drive. Never seen a fixed hub with left side drive (would need left hand thread as well to thread the sprocket on).

I wondered why they didn't just swap the cranks around and use a normal hub. LSD hubs are far less prevalent even in BMX where they seem to be more popular than in any other cycling discipline

Heard him interviewed on BBC Radio Five live earlier this week and he said it was Fixed (Hub). Don't know if having double bottom brackets and front chain rings (To get the gearing) affected which driveside the final drive chain ran down, but Guy Martin definitely said it was Fixed < So even bigger kudos in my eyes.
