I'd still like to know why they're lying to me about volatility in gas markets.

That's the only bit in the excuses I know anything about and it's wrong.

Just been informed of changes to my nPower dual fuel billing:

Gas standing charge down, electricity standing charge down, gas unit price isn't changing, electricity unit price goes up. No idea what the overall impact will be.

I don't think the two things are mutually exclusive.

@Asprilla: that should be a very straightforward calculation. Just take your total kWh used last year for each fuel, multiply up by the new rates, and add the standing charges. If you do your bills online, you should be able to get a bill by bill breakdown back as far as you have been with that supplier/in that house. It's worth keeping tabs on your usage so that if you do upgrade the house (better windows; more insulation) you can see the benefit.

Tbh I never look at my energy bills.

Biggest saving will be when we replace the boilers when we have the scullery re-done.

    .

What isn't mutually exclusive? Either markets are volatile or they aren't. And they're not.

I don't know how much volatility affects retail prices ( I can guess) but they're telling me they are when they aren't.
  • Think our heating per year is around the £600 pound mark for a two bed flat, my folks living out in the hills knocking around in a big old house are £2000.

They also spend a lot more on transport pint of milk is close on a hour return journey etc.

I meant the points that you and jedster raised - the other factors may be pushing up prices, and the companies are putting forward the wholesale price volatility as an excuse, rather than admit that the underinvestment is largely their own fault.
