What with us all being supreme athletes and obviously in the prime of our lives and superb physical specimens, none of us ply our body's with alcohol toxins as we know the detrimental effects that booze can have on performance (and not just bike related).

But, and obviously this is hypothetical, if you were to indulge in a beer after slogging yourself in the embankment peloton, what would you recommend, or what are you currently supping? What's your favourite beer and what should be avoided?

This is the place to talk about it.

Itboffin, Veronese and Sketchly I expect plenty of input....

Either real ale or Belgian beers are my preference these days. Had a can of Carling when I got in from the chaingang last night but I consider that more like pop.

If you can find it then Sierra Nevada Porter (not the pale ale, yuck) is fantastic. My default london ale that is worth tracking down is Sambrook's Wandle which is utterly fantastic and suitable for consumption in massive quantities.

Something local. Sambrooks Wandle is always good. Remember cask ale doesn't travel well. Otherwise I like a nice bottle of a modern IPA, new world ones are often very good. Or Zoider in the summer, mmm.

I'm not overly fussy tbh as long as the quality is there. With the weather turning I'm starting to get onto the darker brews.

There's a great shop across the road from Head for the Hills in Dorking that I normally get a couple of bottles from post-ride to enjoy in front of the football on a Sunday. If I'm low on stocks and it's the local Sainsbury's then I settle for Brewdog or they sometimes have Bad King John. I'm getting to that age where volume becomes important so tend to go for something a little stronger

The Harp in Charing Cross normally has a couple of good porters on and they always seem to have several Darkstar brews. The Cask in Pimlico is my normal watering hole though, purely for the range and frequency that they change them

Oh hello. This is definitely relevant to my interests.

+1 for Wandle (although it travels perfectly well). If you like that, try a Darkstar Hophead or a Redemption Trinity - both perfect post-ride pints and not particularly strong (the latter being about 2.8% but full of hoppy flavour).

But for the last few years I've been hammering the so-called craft beers. Favourites being Kernel, Buxton, Mikkeller, To Ol, Beavertown, Magic Rock, Summer Wine Brewery and Brew by Numbers. To be honest, there are so many out there it's almost futile trying to name them all.

And as December is approaching, I'll be diving in to my annual liver-test fest that is the Beer Advent Calendar. A beer a day in the run-up to Christmas. Sounds easy, eh? Factor in Christmas parties/drinks, etc. and it's one Hell of a task. But someone's got to do it. :D

Anything brewed by the Kernel in Bermondsey. They did a porter which was frighteningly good a while ago.

Old Crafy Hen is pretty alright for easily available stuff too.

Where's Ketsbaiaiiaiaiaiaiaiaia when you need him?

St. Austell's Tribute is delicious on draught in Cornwall, and Trelawny is pretty good for a session!

Edit: Oh, there he is. Damn delay in reading/writing/posting.

Ooh, the Kernel table beer was very good. 2.8% and tasted good. I can't drink strong beer any more as I have no tolerance left. If I want to have any more than 1-2 pints I have to be on very weak stuff!

+1 for Kernel. Their IPA is amazing, but f---ing strong. The Table Beer (mentioned by menthel) is a more manageable strength.

Beer Boutique on Upper Richmond Road in Putney always has an excellent selection of top beers. Might drop in there tomorrow ...

    Blimey - where to start?

Most golden or IPAs will do the trick for me as long as they've been well cared for.

I started mentally listing them all but started losing track after the first 20...

Another vote for Kernel beers, Camden Town Brewery do some nice ones too - the Indian Summer they've been doing recently is amazing.

I tend to favour modern, hoppy pale ales. Off the shelf I'll usually go for Brewdog (Dead Pony Club or Punk IPA), Goose Island etc. in a pub then I'll go for wahetever looks good/local :)

  • Around here they seem to specialise in pale, hoppy beers, all very easily quaffable after some time in the saddle. Ossett Brewery Silver King and Bob's White Lion are two that fit that bill. More widely available is Timothy Taylor's Landlord which is a joy to consume if kept properly though dreadful if not.

I'm a real sucker for Shepherd Neame's output with Spitfire or Bishop's Finger being my favourites in bottles for a good thirst-slaking after a hard ride (god, I sound like one of the Real Ale Tw@s from Viz).

Nothing wrong with golden or pale ales but at this time of year especially I tend to prefer darker or 'ruby' ales. Broadside, ESB, Old Thumper etc. Meantime's Yakima Red is a rare treat also, and yesterday evening I sampled a few pints (had to make sure...) of Fuller's Red Fox http://www.fullers.co.uk/rte.asp?id=479 - very nice indeed.

Of course on special occasions I have a very soft spot for Belgian brews - Chimay Blue, Leffe Bruin, Grimbergen Tripel...

I used to scoff at the very idea of American beer, but the last one I tried was really nice.

I just wish I could remember what it was. Some craft brand porter, IIRC.

I've entered the LBL 2014 all 171 miles of it, just to go to Belgium and drink beer.

Now that is commitment to the cause 8)

Doom Bar is pretty revolting and overrated IMO. I love St Austell's Tribute and Wandle. If you like those two, you'll also like Ringwood Brewery's Best Bitter. Rumour has it that the Ringwood Lads showed Sambrook how to brew beer and Wandle is his take on Ringwood's Best.

    Anything Belgian.

And if I'm in the local - Tapping the Admiral - then I'll have whatever the landlord is supping.

Its actually based more on Young's beer recipes. At least that was what we were told on the tour we had of their brewery. Did it for my brother's stag do, they were very nice indeed. There was a lot of interesting talk about the beer etc and they never let your glass get empty. Superb!

I want to like Robinson's, but found that all I have tried seem to taste the same and somehow insipid.
