25mm winter tyre recommendations

I think it's time for me to renew the tyres that came on my road bike. They're 23mm, but I want to do some weekend rides over the winter months and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for 25mm winter tyres. Something with good puncture resistance and good grip. I've looked on wiggle and there are so many to choose from.

Cheers

Use the same GP 4 seasons but 23mm and the grip / ride is fine for me.
  • Michelin pro race 4 endurance do it for me.

Just tried these too for the first time this year, feel pretty good and seem to be bearing up well. Comparable to GP4000s I was using maybe just a little less supple but I'm hoping they wear slower to make up for that.
  • IF you can fit them just get the 32c Vittoria Randonneur from Planet X. They measure about 30c. Superb in every respect. And so cheap.

  • Over 7 years winter riding only tyre I put are marathons. Many here say that they have no grip and too heavy. But who in winter wants to break the land speed record and take racing lines in January?

And marathons will ride to Saturn and back before they need replacing.

In fairness you have to thank the folks in the Commuting section, that's where the good advice comes from originally...

Have you seen the new HED Belgium C2 full black rims? I have a pair on order... 8)

  • Schwalbe Marathon Plus on my winter hybrid. Shwalbe Durano Plus on my road bike. I'm happy!!!
  • I used to have M+. Think of the Vittorias I mentioned above as Marathon Plus Ultremo ZX. They are that good.

I've also ditched the Durano Plus in favour of them. And they have epic reflective sidewalls.

Riding to Saturn and back would cause the tyres to explode space is a vacuum!

+1 Non folding, fairly heavy and made out of concrete therefore I have found them excellent for winter cr*p roads. :D

No, it'll cause the tubes to explode. There is no air in tyres ;)

Besides, you can run M+ without tubes and actually flat. They feel the same.

I have Conti 4 Seasons on my winter wheels. I'm not convinced they are the most durable of tyres - I'm not the lightest at 13 stone so that may explain why the rear wears out considerably quicker than the front. They aren't a bad compromise. They don't half chuck up a lot of spray on wet surfaces (probably explains their decent grip!). If you are having problems with flats, I'd be inclined to give Shwalbe Durano Plus tyres a go - impression given by a friend who uses them is that they are significantly more hardy than the 4 Seasons and don't feel too lumpen.

Rear tyres always wear quicker as there is more weight on it-get more life out of your tyres by swapping front to back from time to time

You certainly can do that however, I usually have the 4 Seasons on from about now through to late spring when they get changed over to something a bit lighter. I then make a call at this time of year whether the rear is in good shape or if it should be replaced. If I were to leave them on all year round, I'd not bother swapping them rear to front - I'd rather just get a new rear when the time comes than faff around and risk pinching tubes in the process (possibly influenced by a particularly nasty rimmed old pair of dura ace wheels which were near impossible to fit tyres to without at least one tube biting the dust!).
