1st pair of shoes, and pedals?

My commute is only 3 miles each way on tarmac but I also ride MTB occasionally and am looking at road biking too so want to get used to SPD. I'm looking for suggestions for <£40 MTB shoes, and some double sided pedals (because I use my bike to nip to the shops and stuff).

Sizes are an issue, I believe. Shimano are tight fitting apparently. I take a UK 7-7.5 in normal shoes so guess an 8 in cycling shoes. Does that work for most makes or only Shimano?

    Get Shimano M520 pedals but with the clip in reflector inserts. The inserts double as flat pedals if you're in normal shoes.

    Don't try and get shoes mail order, you really need to try them on. Visit a few local bike shops and see what they have, I find Shimano's own shoes last well and are very comfy. If you buy them with pedals at the same time don't be shy about asking for a discount.

    Thanks. Didn't know the M520 had that option. That could be really handy, so I could clip the reflectors on when I'm nipping to the shops in flat shoes, and otherwise have double-sided clips to reduce faff time.

    Just leave the reflectors in. They make the pedals hang down so that's actually easier to clip into!
