Best races of the last 30 years (or so)

I'm looking to grab some new footage for this winters turbo work from a certain Dutch site. Whilst I have most of the good Tour stuff from the last 30 years, I'm sure there are many great classics and other races that would be well worth watching from that period.

All suggestions very welcome :)

Slightly outside 30 years, but you won't get more epic than the 1980 Liege-Bastogne-Liege. There's tons of stuff on Google. Here's a taster:

    1989 TdF Stage 21 TT.

If that's not inspiration or your turbo it's time to hang up your wheels.

Better still is this one for Inspiration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGPGm38wt5g
Don't forget, that was the year he was thrashed by the EPO men in Italy. :!:

I can imagine Frank Vandenbroucke's butcherwork in the 1999 Vuelta stage to Avila being good turbo video material

That's the kind of stuff. As mentioned, I have decent Tour coverage, but very little from the Vuelta and only really Pantani's days in the Giro, with nothing from the Classics <2010.

I assume you've got Roche's La Plagne effort in 87 and Chiappucci to Sestriere in 1992.

I've got the 87 Tour, but not the 92 one (the download broke). Shall look again to see if they have it.

    From the top of my head;

Paris-Roubaix 1994 (wet, muddy, funny bikes, epic escape)
Liege-Bastogne-Liege 1997 (when Bartoli despatched the ONCE duo of Jalabert and Zuelle)
    1998 World Championships
    Lombardy 2006

Not many people rate it butI've become a big fan of the Fleche Wallone as a result of watching them on the turbo. there is inevitably a break away (so you can spin and warm up for 20-30 min) which will get wound in slowly (time to up your effort) then you finish off with the deperate charge up the Mur de Huy (maximum effort here). time to warm down.

Cuddles victory was pretty classy a few years ago. Others made a bid and he was nowhere until it mattered. Watch and enjoy

The Alpe d'Huez stage in the 1990 Tour, a great stage IMO
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

The problem with the 1990 Paris-Roubaix video I know, is that you have to listen to Liggett!

I prefer this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF8boU1HRIo, 1997 Frédéric Guesdon, surprise winner (sorry if that’s a spoiler, phreak).
I also like this Kelly 1984 P-R clip because I think the music works for cycling to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fztwlbrAxmA
The music in this Merckx TT from the 1971 TdF works less well, but it’s interesting trying to follow his wheel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l55SqabSNMY

Simplest thing to do, if don’t mind Italian, or the sometimes poor picture quality, is to enter ‘Perle di sport – Ciclismo’ in a search engine. It should direct you to a playlist of almost 90 cycling videos from between about 1960 and 2010 - classics, Tour and Giro stages, some short, some longish, all taken from the RAI series.

Included there are 3 on FJS’s list – Bugno 1990 MSR, Cipollini 2002 Worlds RR, Bettini 2006 Lombardy (the first two are the same links as in Perle di sport, but FJS’s link for Bettini is better quality than the Perle di sport one).
Another in the Perle di sport series is Pantani’s climb to Oropa in 1999 - essential watching for anyone who intends to watch the same finish climb during the 2014 Giro in commemoration of Pantani's 1999 win there.

The first week of that race was immense.

    Here's my contribution for now.

Dunno about the best, but the worst clip for a turbo session is probably the one that was doing the rounds a couple of years ago with Cancellara descending to a massive operatic score. You'd pedal precisely twice and then fall off sideways trying to follow his line through the corner...
  • Dunno about the best, but the worst clip for a turbo session...

Not a race as such, but the DVD I got with my Cyclops turbo is entertaining in its own way. Coach Robbie Ventura talks us through the warmup and then a 40 minute crit with a camera on his bike. When Robbie calls for an effort, you just have to follow. It's rather cheesy, but my average pace was around 3% higher than normal which is usually only achieveable via EPO, so credit where it's due! The only disappointment is that Robbie gets outsprinted at the end, so we have to settle for 3rd place.

Tour of Flanders 2011. Don't think it's been mentioned already. Fantastic race!
  • Yeah it was a great result with an awful result. Can remember how incensed I was that that pip-squeak won having done nothing all race for the fans.
