So, I have the bike, the helmet and some gloves.

Now i was hoping someone could shed some light on the essential items you have stuffed in you rucksack for the long days out and about?

There's many a thread about this but I'll add: Condoms.

Hydration bladder, small tool kit with self adhesive puncture patches, tyre levers, multitool etc, small length of chain and 2 quicklinks and 2 spare tubes and 25 packets of Haribo's* (when I set out).

*This may be a slight exageration!

  • Tatty old lightweight waterproof top, water bladder, a warm layer at this time of year, two tubes, pump, puncture repair kit, spoke key, chain tool, chain split links, spare frame hanger, tyre levers, allen keys/screwdriver minitool, a bit of old rag and a phone. Think that's it although longer or higher rides might attract waterproof bottoms, a blizzard style survival bag and some food also. Sometimes my shock pump comes along too.

I've been thinking about a new first aid kit since my old one died of mould left in the back of a kayak. Figure you need to be able to deal with severe bleeding, fractures and sprains and of course good ol hypothermia, but perhaps that's for another post.....

Water, snack, tools, tube+patches, pump, first aid kit and often a map. I also carry spare contact lenses, and a small pair of pliers... it's easy to accumulated nice-to-have stuff, but the pliers have proved essential on several occasions so they stay. Before I head out I add my phone and my GPS logger.

I know someone who always packs a bog roll. Can guarantee he'll need a 'number 2' on a ride out! Only happened to me once - dock leaves - natures toilet paper; abrasive on one side for wiping and waxy on the other for polishing.

    hydration bladder
    first aid kit
    poncho
    space blanket
    map
    compass
    multi tool
    puncture outfit
    knife
    lights
    all in a dry bag
  • Water (better to take more than you need rather than not enough or buy camelback)
Food (if it's a long ride)
    Multi tool
    Pedal wrench.
Cloth - switches to bog roll in the cold (I have ewwy runny nose syndrome that I can't always sniff out if someone is following)
Mobile Phone, ID & some cash.
Spare clothing dependant on whether it's cold/rainy (normally a top of some sort)

You should carry a puncture repair kit, pump, & spare tubes and know how to use them, but I never bother.

You'll take a pedal spanner, but no tube/pump etc?
    Really?

I thought that was a bit strange too, lol.
  • Well, I don't always put the pedal spanner in the bag. I don't get punctures (famous last words) I run tubeless @ 30psi mostly on trail centres that are more prone to ripping a massive gaping hole as I fond with my last rear tire.

If I'm riding with people there is generally at least one repair kit in the group.

I generally try and make sure the bike is working before I hit the trail so I don't have to waste time fixing the bike.
