Best single day of racing ~ 2013

Season now over (pretty much), but which race was best? And rather than trying to compare a stage race to a single day race (which I don't think you can do), how about what was the best single day of racing, regardless if it was part of a stage race or not?

For me, it would be the Ventoux stage of the Tour, which was based on seeing it from the roadside. Otherwise the Double Duez was great. And Liege was as well...

I predict P-R will be the best day in 2014

MSR. It's quite a rubbish route but the last 50km or so had it all.

MSR, P-R and the echelon Tour stage (13?) nailbiting stuff!

Although being at the top of the Croix Fry for Stage 19 of the Tour in a mental lightning storm waiting for Costa was pretty good too ;-)

LBL. Great finale, good teamwork from Garmin and possibly the first outing for those glasses.

And a panda. What more could you want?

Actually I'm mistaken. Ryder rode in a pair of Oakleys at LBL.

Indeed, he wore a rather natty pink pair of Radarlocks.

MSR, LBL, Tour Echelon stage or the finale of the Vuelta

Moment of the year was Chavanel realising Cav had got onto the back of the echelon

    "Hey! You got across!"
"Damn. There goes my stage win!"
"Damn. I'm on the front for the next 50k!"

Roubaix for me. Was a goodie.

Roubaix was great but my favourite race day was the Tour echelon stage - probably because it was such a nice surprise.

If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

I'm still smiling with the Roma Maxima back in March.
Doh I didn't know he was out front.
    I thought I had won. :)

My choice as well, truly dramatic race this year. Mad hardman weather, 50km at the end with plenty happening, and a win for MTN Qhubeka :-)

LBL was top as well, as was Ventoux.

  • hard to say which was my fav, there were lots of good races and for many different reasons. I liked Gent-Wevelgem because everyone expected Sagan to wait for sprint from that break but he took them all by surprised by hitting out early and was gone
  • Several one day races were better than any of the classics, but if folks don't get to see them, I guess they aren't worth posting.
Not feeling all the Paris-Roubaix love, also getting the nod on another forum.
The race was spoiled for me, by the Stybar crowd mishap.

It's a toss up between P-R and Tour Echelon, with Echelons just pipping it because of what TWH pointed out above and the joy of reading "ECHELONS.... THIS IS NOT A DRILL" in the spoiler thread.

I watched PR and enjoyed it. I'm fairly sure of it. But I just had to google the winner. Seriously. That probably says more about my malfunctioning memory synapses than the race itself, but....

  • Riblons win on Alpe D'Huez - although mainstream - seemed to sum up the season perfectly. More gutsy racing and a never give up attitude

  • It was a nice surprise for PR to be good after Canc had dominated RVV.

The Tour stage that Dan Martin won was edge of the seat stuff for most of the day.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo was pretty epic

Looking at my Sky + this evening, turns out I haven't actually watched Paris Roubaix...

The Ventoux stage, a stuffed hog will always add a certain something.

What with Horner's Vuelta, it's been a vintage year for endangered species. My top 3:

It was a great Tour for Pro Race spoiler threads even down to the carmargue horse avatar lots of us had for the last stage. (sighs and stares into the distance out of the office window)

  • Best single day of racing? Ventoux. Being on the climb that day was amazing.
  • Would have to be Tony Martins solo breakaway at the Vuelta then getting done 2 meters from the line.

    Gutsy.

Good choice Motoman. Tony Martin's near win at Vuelta is for me the best ride of 2013.
