Narrowed It Down To 3

Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my hardtail. I currently have the Rock Rider 8.2 xc replica which has treated me well this year but I am considering getting a second bike and looking at getting a full suspension.

I have narrowed it down to 3 contenders

Rockrider 9.2

Or spend a bit more on the Rockrider 9.7 but I am not sure what you get for the extra £500

But once stepping up into this price bracket it brings the Giant Anthem X 29er into it.

What is best value for money do you think? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

If it's the right size, buy it!

    No need to thank me........

  • Anthem is a pretty good race bike @ 100mm. I nearly got one of them last year.

If you can wait then go for the 2014 Giant Trance X 29er or the Trek Fuel EX7 29er (both 120mm 29er trail bikes) Trance X will be cheaper.

26 inch Trek Fuel is still a pretty good bike too that starts at £1400 (130mm)

The Anthem doesn't ride like a race bike. It's actually a really decent trail bike. Suspension travel isn't everything and more isn't always better especially on lower end full sus bikes. The basic Trek Fuel is pretty horrible to ride.

a carbon frame by the look of it ? plus a shorter warranty period on it
  • Not looking to do anything too outrageous. Local trails around Kent with the odd trip to the south downs and maybe a yearly trip to Wales. I will keep my hardtail but just really feel like having one of both without smashing the budget. The Rock Rider I have at the moment has served me very well so not too worried about buy another but wondered if I was restricting my options with Decathlon.

After talking to my local bike shop they have suggested looking at 650b to get the best of both. which opens up a whole new minefield ! Although after listening to them it does seem to appeal a bit and by the sounds of it a lot of the major brands are moving in this direction with next years models.

Carbon frame is a no for me this time as my hardtail is carbon and I do worry sometimes when descending and I feel large flints flick up and clash on the frame! although I love how light it is when lifting through gates.

For your usage and the fact you don't want another Carbon, stick to the 9.2

650B is new, latest fad and as such you pay a premium it's not worth right now.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
