Hello

I'm buying my new drivetrain and want options on this list

Crankset - SLX - £85 bike components
Cassette - SLX - £28 Ribble
Shifters - XT - £65 Merlin (include cable)
Rear mech- SLX shadow + - £38.50 Ribble (SGS)
Front mech - SLX - £20 Bike discount
Chain - Shimano SLX HGX - £13.50 Ribble
Cables - Does it really matter?
Cable housing - Jagwire or XT

Not drivetrain but slightly relavent
Brakes - SLX - £115 Bike components

Would this be a good set or are there any other brands or models in a similar price range I should look at?

Thanks

Updated with cost, please say if you have found any cheaper

Can't go wrong with any of that. Personally I'd go (have gone twice) for an XT cassette (can be got for the same price as SLX if you look around and weighs a fair bit less) and would go for an XT rear mech

  • I have a full slx groupset on my custom build and a full xt groupset on my cube and I can't really see any difference apart from a small weight difference the current slx stuff is sooo nice as well I went for slx on the custom build because I couldn't justify the extra for the xt stuff!
The new slx brakes are almost the same as the xt's as well both have free stroke adjustment on them and amazing stopping power!

XT shifters are well worth the extra over the SLX IMHO. I'm not impressed with the build of SLX shifters.

I'm guessing those extra XT pieces are mainly weight saving?

I chose the XT over SLX on shifters because I can shift up twice in 1 movement which is handy on a fast trail with lots of braking so I can shift marginally faster. Also XT is crisper from what I've heard

And Jamie - I would always us shimano brakes maybe Hope if the price was right.. But I would choose Shimano over SRAM everytime
  • The new slx shifter have the double shift the same as the xt shifters!

Humm, the XT are barely any more expensive however and they are slightly crisper

^This! Otherwise SLX is pretty solid and generally better value than XT imo.
  • I'm sure i saw the xt shifter half price somewhere recently think it may have been merlin cycles just check there site anyway! Maybe a bargain to be had on them. I bought a full slx 2 x 10 groupset including brakes for £349 from merlin and the xt stuff was £449 so that's the reason I went for full slx. But you are probably right the xt shifter are slightly better than slx ones. I will probably upgrade to xt when the slx ones brake!

SRAM is where it's at. Full X0 groupset.
I always preferred Shimano until I got SRAM X0 transmission. The gear shifting is so much better than X0 and you get 4 upshifts in one and the release is faster with half the lever movement. Nicer shifters as well

I would consider the X0 or X01 but I can't afford it unfortunately

    Guidance on this please http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/mtb-bm ... himgmrr115

    What is the direct mount?
    Is this for 2x10?
Long or medium for a 26/38 or 24/38 setup?

Assuming an 11-36 cassette, you need a capacity of 25T (11-36) for the cassette and 12T (38-26) or 14T (38-24) for those to options, both (12+25=37 and 14+25=39) put you over the 35T capacity for the GS so you'd need an SGS.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Thanks! Just saw the FAQ thing but you already worked it out

SGS is a definite as shimano GS only goes up to 35T

    Cassette - XT - £40 Ribble

Rear mech - SLX Shadow + - £38 Ribble (SGS only) - bike discount £40 (GS + SGS)

Front mech direct mount - SLX - £19 bike components

Shifters - XT - £65 merlin (cables included)

    Crankset - SLX - £88 bike discount

    Chain - XT - £15

    Roughly £250.
Found any of those parts cheaper?

    Updated with chain

    XT - £15

Is that chain fine with the XT 2x10?
