Good Value Brakes for a Big Lad?

Hi Guys,

Got me a Rockrider Big RR 5.3 29er and got out on a few trails recently - but I have noticed that the mechanical mx5 brakes are not enough to scrub any speed of for me when on a descent.

Im 19 stone and 6ft3 - I am sure the weight will make a difference?

Can anybody suggest a good value, hydro system that will stop the thing so I can advance my riding skills - As at the moment I feel the lack of brakes are holding me back form pushing on as I cannot scrub any speed off at speed if I need too.

I can buy second hand, and don't really want to spend loads of wongas.

Cheers

I bought a pair of Deore M445s for £60 on eBay. They're in great condition and work fine. Much better than the previous Tektro mechanical offering that was on there

However, for not much more, you can get yourself a new set of the M596s which are on sale:

If you're on a tight budget, these don't seem bad for the price?

if you search around you'll get close to that price I'm sure, if you don't mind switching hoses over then some of the German shops can be quite cheap

Deore brakes are brilliant, and if you get them from the UK all you need to do is shorten the hoses. Which isn't such a big deal. The German sites may be cheaper, but you have to pay a few quid in P&P which makes Wiggle or CRC the cheapest again. If you're coming from a cable disk, just change the calipers at first and see how much better the braking is - then decide if you need to change the rotors or not.

Another vote for Deore http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/mtb-parts/brakes/disc-brakes/shimano-disc-brakes/shimano-deore-m596-disc-brake-set-front-rear.html - I'd try them at 160mm first as they will pretty much stop a charging rhino - if you need a bigger disc and adapter it wont be too pricey.
