Hi,
My son has a bike with 3 piece square taper bottom bracket (like this one on the picture) and is moving now sideways so i need to do something with this.
My question is: can I replace it with different type bb, something more up to date?

Should be doable. Probably best to replace with a square taper cartridge type bearing to save getting new cranks and chainrings. You should probably check that the faces of the bottom bracket are parallel and clean, also what type are the threads inside the bottom bracket. (LBS can do this for you and let you know what thread and cartridge you need). Lots of videos on the web show you how to do it and should be pretty quick. You will however need the right tools, crank puller, the right lock ring spanner, grease etc. good luck
