Second bike / Commuter bike

Hello,
I am fairly new to the cycling world having come from a running background through triathlon and therefore have a only basic knowledge of bikes. I already own a very nice fast cervelo s2 for the summer and triathlon racing circuit however I am looking for something to use as a second bike for the winter (with mudguards) as well as to be used for commuting to work and back all year long (so space for paniers maybe).
I'm not looking to spend too much (up £500) but would be willing to stretch a little further if it was a particularly good deal. Preferably looking at second hand to maximise the value for money.
Many thanks for your help and I look forward to your suggestions.
Steve
