Dropout spacers for screw-through forks/frames

Hi,

I've not owned a bike with screw-through axles/dropouts before, but have one on order. Unfortunately it won't arrive in time for my holiday to Crans Montana next week, so I'm hiring a bike (also with screw-through dropouts). If travelling with a QR dropout bike, I'd use spacers when packing my bike, to stop the forks/frame being bent in transit. Do I need to find and buy similar devices for a screw-through dropout bike? Or does one just screw the axles into the frame/fork (without wheels in place) and these take care of keeping the frame/forks from being squashed?

Thanks,
Col

ps - recommendations for a one-day, intermediate-level trail loop in Crans Montana welcomed!
