Problem gear shifting

Hi

Really new to all this so please be kind :wink:

Got a Rockrider 5.2 after reading advice here.

It has gear shifts left 1 - 3 and right 1 - 8.

The 1 - 8 works fine.

The 1 -3 I am having trouble with.

I phoned Decathlon today and they said it was the two small screws that needed adjustment.

I was told to tighten them both by maybe three turns, I did this and it made the problem worse.
The issue I was having was that when going from 2 to 1 the chain was going past the smallest cog and ending up on the pedal axle.

I did as directed but found it would not change down to 1 at all.
So I backed them off two turns, then one more so I should be back at the start.

Now I can change down to 1 without much issue, but changing up to 2 is a problem.
The chain never quite makes it unless I hold the change lever ober towards 3.

Given there are two screws I'd assume one was for up and the other down?

Really appreciate some help on how to get this sorted please?

    Read Park Tool website and perhaps a few vids.

    From a quick read I think you need to screw in the inner stop so stop it over shifting, put some more tension in the cable through the barrel adjuster and make sure it can shift there by adjusting the outer limit screw,

    Thanks, yes I have come to understand what these two screws do now! a manual would have been great.
    Also found a cable adjuster on the back of the shift lever! so where I am now is, chain was shifting perfectly but dragging on the inside of the derailleur cage .
    Adjusted for that, and now it won't shift from small cog to big cog :( Grrrrr why can't I just buy something that works first time!!!

    Chainring at the front (cassette at the rear).

    The front mech should never be able to touch a chainring.

    Or do you mean the chain was dragging on the mech cage?

    A front mech is a clunky old beast at best, but fine tuning (1/4 turn at a time) the front cable tension will sort it out.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Hi, thanks, yes just saw its the 'cage' I am on about.
    Chain was dragging on the inside edge of the cage.
    From what I am reading it really is trial and error to get this right?

    Not really, but once you've done it a few million times it's easy.
