I'm really trying hard at the moment to service the headset in my 2008 gt avalanche 1.0, but I am really struggling to get the forks out. Tried wacking the steerer with a rubber mallet and squirting it with gt-85 to see if that would loosen it up but no luck. Please help!!

Thanks, ripped abs :s

Bounce them up and down a few times and whack harder.

If the steerer is rusty, they can be a beatch to remove, frame between the knees, fork end off the ground (obviously) and bash using a hammer and a block of hard wood (don't hit direct) once you have some movement push the forks up in the frame, push the top cover down and remove the centring wedge.

Use wood and you can't if you don't miss. You are hitting it with the wheel not on the floor aren't you?

Bounce the front end up and down to loosen things off. If you are using a rubber mallet or a block of wood you won't break the bike.

Mine were like this, spent a long time bashing it with a lump hammer and block of wood while my mate held the bike and no joy. Propped the bike up under the downtube and it went with one hit.

I was scared too but it turned out alright.

  • when you say you propped it up under the downtube, do you mean with the bottom bracket shell touching the floor?
