As this is your first road bike, heed this advice - Do not buy a bike until you have had chance to sit on one first. Even if you have had a MTB or another bike, road bikes need to be a lot more closely fitted to you. Comfort is also paramount. You are best going to a bike shop and getting a feel of a bike or two to see what you need. Also get advice on what you are likely to be using it for as you fail to mention this - i.e sportives, fitness, racing etc - can make a big difference in your decision. Also have you factored in helmet and clothing in your budget? You may already have these but again you don't mention so.

Thanks - with the cannondale and the trek I'd be able to buy in my local shop so would have it fitted properly to the right size
I will probably be using daily for fitness, along with sportives

I think 700 for bike alone then will get additionals, helmet lights etc, separately, so if you have any recommendations for the 700 then I'd love to take a look too

I would say the one you feel most comfortable on or like the look of most is something only you can decide. If you are asking which bike is better, then both are probably on par. Do you know the groupsets they have on them? I would think most likely Sora or Tiagra at the price you mention, saying that, if one has a 105 complete or even mix with other stuff get that as it would be a smoother in the gear changes and the brakes would be better too.

End of the day, it down to personal preference. Don't go feeling you have to follow a crowd or something. Treks are common as muck but they are still good. Cannondales have a good rep for comfort and lightness in the frames.

I know the spec are both Sora, but do the ones in the LBS have the same spec?

Just to confuse you further my lbs has a moda bolero on sale for £800. Slightly above budget but its a 1k bike which has 105 equipment so you get a lot for your £100. Its a 54cm frame. Chris:s bikes in girton fyi.
