Hi guys,

I have a trekking bike, not really a pure MTB model but i still go off road many times. I would like to buy my first MTB clipless shoes. I have no idea where to start. I have seen very different models such as

1) Shimano SH-MT43L Touring Shoe
https://www.bike24.net/1.php?product=2626;dbp=270;page=6;content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,18,58

2) Scott MTB Comp Shoe

3) Shimano SH-XC30L MTB Shoe
https://www.bike24.net/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,18,58;product=40880

The first model looks like the traditional bike / trekking style and the 2 and 3 option looks more modern, maybe lighter but i don't know how durable. What kind of confused me is the different design of the sole and the look of holes in the sole where you put the cleats. May be is a dumb question but the 2 and 3 option could it be easier to insert the shoe while pedaling? :?

Here is a more clear picture of what i mean

What do you think? Any suggestion?

Best,
S

For design1 you are required to remove the area highlighted in the image. This will reveal the two slots where you attach the cleat. It means Shimano only have to make one shoe for flat pedals and clipless pedals.

Not tried those exact shoes but as Shimano also make pedals their shoes usually have correct clearance to clip in and out fine.

Option1 will be better for walking on, so if you plan on spending time walking around as well as on the bike go for them.

But option2 & 3 will almost certainly be lighter and stiffer and be better for time on the bike. You can still walk in them but not as easily as option1.

But a with any shoe for any purpose try before you buy.

thanks jairaj for the very good info! :)

I was kind of considering option 1 because is more multi purpose. I hope the sole is rigid so it feels right on the bike and doesn't put too much stress in the foot. Unfortunately i am far from a store from where i am now, so i cannot try them...i can only buy it online so there is a bit of a chance in the election on what i will be getting.

    thanks again,

The shoe was designed to be a cycling shoe first so will have a stiffer sole compared to a normal walking shoe.

    no problem, you're welcome.

Good choice, I've got a very similar pair of shoes and I really like them. Light, stiff and good ventilation. They will get cold in the winter but if you wear warm and waterproof socks then they are fine.
