My beloved hand built free ride bike converted to commuter got stolen and I don't have anywhere near as much money as I had some years back. It cost me over £3k and I just can't do that again.

Looking to spend £1000-1500 for it's replacement. The problem is I've broken half a dozen bikes, hence why I had a Freeride commuter bike. But that was some years back so I'm hoping things have moved on.

I am over 22 stone and have tree trunk legs that chew up lesser chainsets. My commute is 10 miles and I push myself hard every day.

Key points for me would be:

1. Take 1.6" sport contact tyres.
2. Have hydraulic discs
3. Strong enough to take the weight and the power.

Is anyone making anything off the shelf designed for punishing commutes?

Aren't Surly bikes supposed to be pretty hefty?
