No, merino doesn't wick as well as synthetic materials but it is warmer than them. For me it has it uses in really cold weather but that is it really.

So a baselayer over the top of a string base layer works well, but the merino gets wet close to the skin? Why did he not try the merino over the top of the string base layer? How did the HH do on it's own?
    How about other manufacturers tops?

Seems a bit of a small test to come to any conclusion....

string vest + ls merino = wet merino = not very warm ( tried this out last weekend in very cold conditions )
HH on it's own, don't know for riding a bike but it's comfy for slumming about the house

It's not really a "product test" I am not "what base layer?" magazine :D

I have used merino base layers over several years though and they aren't the best choice for a large sweaty audax rider.

+1 merino isn't as good in warm weather or long, hard rides IMO. Good for easy commuting when it's cooler though.

big fan of my Craft synthetics for hard/warm rides.

+1 really. Big fan of Craft baselayers too, including their merino one!
