Hello, I have just purchased a new mountain bike and I'm yet to buy a lock as my previous bikes didn't require one. Can anyone tell me which lock Offers best vfm. The bike is worth 800 pounds. Don't really want to spend a fortune! Any advice is greatly appreciated

Whatever your insurers require.

Yes please. I was looking at the onguard locks. The pit bull series are around £25 and they have a gold rating. Any opinions on the brand?0

Not really relevant, if it's gold it's basically OK, but still defeatable, you'll also want a cable to keep your wheels on, a bike without wheels is a bit pointless.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

its a bit heavy to carry but i use two d locks with my bike.0

Have a look at "Kryptonite" locks. They are apparently the toughest and best locks.
No matter what you chose, DONT RELY ON ONLY A CABLE. Biggest mistake one could make, im speaking from experience, ive lost 4 bikes because of cable locks when i first got into biking. Cables get knifed off far too easily. Massive problem in London...Probably wont be as bad for you if you live in an area where crime isnt so damn high.
D locks are the best ones to go for. Dont go for a shitty one because i did, and it broke eventually and my bike was locked up, so i had to hack saw it off and ruined the paint on my bike.0 -
This looks like a good deal:

But if you want the maximum then have a look at this one.

Why would you ride a bike in London anyway? You'll get run over several times, mugged, then have your bike stolen.0

I havent been hit by a car just yet
Ive had 4 bikes stolen but i saw one the following week after it got stolen and nicked it back
I was mugged for my bike while talking with my mate on the side of the road by about 15 black guys. I refused to give them my bike and by pure chance a police car came round the corner and they stopped so i left. I dont think ive ever cycled so fast in my entire life...
In defence of my GT (the one from the CC thread) one of the thiefs exact words were "Oooo nice bike"0 -
Hoodies are not known for their taste in bikes as most seem to ride creaky full sus Apollos. With the saddle as low as possible.
Which may or may not be a reflection on your GT, but that's an issue for a seperate thread.I don't do smileys.

Thanks for the advice. I will ring the insurance company tomorrow to double check which lock rating I need to get to be fully covered.0 -

That's because said Apollos are actually fullon Dh rigs, some even with the double crown forks and all that, and the riders are clearly the next Sam Hill0 -

I live literally 5 minutes away from a place called Edmonton. I believe it had the most stabbings/muggings etc in England at one point. Wont be surprised if it still does. That rape thing that happened in Jubilee Park and was all over the news, that was in Edmonton... And not too far away from me you've also got Tottenham and Hackney. All 3 of which are HORRIBLE places to be in with ridiculous crime rates. So It really is rough around where i live unfortunately.
The traffic though isnt bad at all! Never had any problems with traffic to be honest. They dont go for manic overtakes and they always give you room on the side of the road. Bus drivers though...what wankers.0 -
I've been to Enfield before. It was sh1t.0

I agree! Very sh1t. Its not just the crime and all that.
The only form of a good bit of offroad is a DJ track which is about 5km away...looks like ive gotta lose the 32t ring on my cranks to get there on the same day...i havent actually tried it yet but id imagine it will be reaaaaaally slow.0 -

Seeing as I could run that far in 20 minutes, a leisurely 10-15 minute ride would seem quite doable.I don't do smileys.

Hmm. I guess so. Gotta give it a try once i get it done before i decide weather or not to change it. Just checked and its exactly 4.8 km so not that far.
Im going to buy a larger chainring anyway so i can ride on normal bike rides too. Eg. riding down the side of the river lee for the day. So i can change accordingly.0 -
