Touring Iceland - quickest way to the other end?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are going to be going for a quick bike trip to Iceland. Unfortunately, we don't have enough time to do a full "lap" of the country, so are planning on riding from one end to the other. However, getting us and our bikes back the other way seems quite tricky.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Any other tips also appreciated!

I'm also planning on doing a bike trip over the summer.

Our rough plan is to do the golden circle attractions by all the small back roads, then had head across the interior between the 2 large glaciers and get to Akeyuri. From there we intend to either hire a car and drive back to reykjavic dropping the car off there, or to take the bus. The let you take your bike on for a fee.

Not sure which is best or which cost the least. The buses seem to be quite good with buses going round the ringroad all year and across the interior as well during the summer. I think we're definately just going to play it by ear though due to distances being so dependent on the weather.

I would also recommend getting the Fedakort maps. We've bought a couple and have everything you need on there, contours, sights, tourist attraction, all the small roads and accomodation/camping.

I think we may now be leaning towards doing a more circular route, crossing the interior as getting from one end to the other by bus sounds horrible (in one chunk anyway).
