Just booked a lodge in Mabie for this September and plan on doing the Dalbeattie trail as many times as possible.

Who here's done I and what can I expect, your experiences, what might I need and what other 7 Staines trails should I hit while over there?

  • The hardrock trail is a belter, some great features add to the fun quotant, the slab is quite a psychological test the first time, just commit, the twins are excellent too.
I would say if you like rocky trails this is probably one of the best staines, nearly forgot about all the north shore, some testing skinnies near the end, enjoy!.

You'll be spitting distance from Kirroughtree - very much worth visiting.
How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.

One of my locals being a Dumfries native :D

Kirry is about an hour from Dalbeattie
Ae is 45mins or so and Mabie 1/2hr
    Drumlanrig is about an hour

There is a coastal path between Sandyhills and Kipford which is fun

I stayed near Dumfries October last year and rode Dalbeattie, Mabie, Kirroughtree & Ae.

Ae is the best IMO & I'd definitely go back, there's great varied singletrack and the final descent is awesome.

Mabie is also good and has some great fun descents with fast berms and little kickers & tables

Kirroughtree is also good but feels more like an xc route and not quite as fun as Ae & Mabie but still good (McMoab was a bit of a disappointment though)

Dalbeattie was pretty rubbish, very little good flowing singletrack and felt like you had to put a lot of work in for little reward, I wouldn't go back there.

By rubbish I assume you're refferring to the fact it's not motorway smooth like most other trail centres seem to be... you actually have to think a bit more about your line and where you're going as opposed to sitting on a bike and going along a rollercoaster trail? You get out of it what you put in, personally I found it to be right up there and loved every minute of it. While it's by not massively difficult it's more technically challenging, rough and rocky than your average red trail and all the more fun for it.

Anyway, to the OP Kirroughtree is well worth a visit, the red shares a fair bit with the blue from what I can remember so in places it's fairly flowy and fast then gets more technical, and the black is great fun. Would be a shame to go to the stanes and miss it.

How long are you spending in Dumfries?
Dumfries Stanes are my local trails.
Obviously you can ride from the door @ Mabie
Ae and Dalbeattie are about 1/2hr drive from your Pod
Drumlanrig about 45mins drive up the A76
Kirry, a 1hr drive and worth the effort

As you can see from the comments the trails are all different and receive different reviews from different people
    what might I need

Just your usual trail gear + a few spare tubes and be prepared for a bit of rain :D

+ if you fancy adding the coastal path to your ride it can be stunning on a good day:

    +1 for Drumlanrig and Kirroughtree

Drumlanrig is full of techy rooty trails which seem natural, great for a few laps.
Kirroughtree is quieter than most trail centres, but still has good trails. I had to bail on the black so missed McMoab but from my mates' pictures I'm proper regretting it
