Bike Insurance

I used to have my home insurance covered by M&S and having unnamed items up to £4000 was a god send for bike insurance. I have recently moved and this loop hole has now been closed with pedal cycles having an explicit limit of £1000 unless they are named items.

Does anyone know of any home contents cover which has decent bike cover or a decent amount of unnamed item cover included? I want to try and avoid named items or special bike cover as it all tends to be a rip off.

Simon

There are loads of threads on here about bike insurance, this one for example...

Have you had a quote from them? If not how do you know its a rip off & if you have had a quote from them if its a rip off you must have had other quotes to compare it too, no?

M&S did my home insurance for years and I had several bikes under the limit and one that was just over with a few mod's and they were pretty good price wise.

I'd give them a call as you never know. But there are loads of similar threads on BR to so would suggest a quick look in them too for peoples advice on who/what/where they get their cover from too.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Holy crapamole. I got an M&S quote for buildings & contents - £80 a month or £1000 a year standard cover. And £100 month or £1200 a year premium cover. For a bike valued at £3800 and another at £1200. In SE21 postcode and with two claims (one in 09 and one in 08). Before my impending move I had M&S premium cover in the same postcode and paid £60 a month (that was with the £4000 unnamed item clause in place).

I recently (when I got a new commuter bike) got a quote for specialist bike insurance and that was expensive. But I did get it just for the commuter which was £50 a year so it was not linked to the home insurance.

I'm with Cycleguard, but through being a British Cycling member. I pay £13 a month for £2k bike.

I've claimed for theft twice in 12 months, both times they have been great to deal with.
2020 Reilly Spectre - raw titanium
2020 Merida Reacto Disc Ltd - black on black
    2015 CAAD8 105 - very green - stripped to turbo bike
    2018 Planet X Exocet 2 - grey

    The departed:

    2017 Cervelo R3 DI2 - sold
    Boardman CX Team - sold
    Cannondale Synapse - broken
    Cube Streamer - stolen
    Boardman Road Comp - stolen
  • I wouldn't get Cycleguard if I were you as they have a terrible reputation for not paying out. One guy had his bike completely stripped and just the frame as left and they wouldn't give him a penny because they said the components were accessories!.
Just look on the internet and theirs loads of examples of where they wont pay out.
The best way forward is going through the house insurance I have found and make sure you read all the small print.Shop around for the best deal.
I'm with the AA and the bike is covered within the policy for contents and its £50.00 per year for all and if the bike got stolen I'd have to pay the 1st £100 and they will pay the rest.
Also all contents of the garage are covered upto £3K.

The 3k limit was an issue for me. I have my bike insured as a named risk for £1.5k but this counts towards the £3k limit on our contents policy and the insurer won't let us raise this ceiling. There are other bikes in the garage as well that take the value over our £3k limit. So if we get them all stolen at once, we are effectively underinsured. Now I am aware of this I shall be checking this out explicitly at next renewal.
