Just a quick one. This may seem weird, but, providing it's a hard tail, could I build a road bike out of a mountain bike frame?
Just ride.

    yes and no.

you could build a 29er with road tyres and drops on a 26" frame.

well you can get slicks on a 26" wheel but you then end up with stupid small wheels.

it does depend on what you are trying to do.

My commuter is a 700c frame but fitted with 26" wheels and running 26x1.5" slicks...you can get 26x1.0 slicks but they are crazy tiny.....
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

If you have discs, you can run 29er/700c rims and skinny tyres on a 26" MTB frame. Ditch the suspension forks too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
