what happened to the unpc joke thread?

  • Do blonde people have a history of being subjugated, attacked and killed for no reason than their hair colour?

Ah, now I get it. So the suitability of a joke's subject matter is determined by whether said subject has been 'subjugated, attacked and killed' in the past. But of course, it's probably the context surrounding the subject matter which makes the joke 'funny' in the first place.

*You should replace the word funny with 'outrageously disgusting' where appropriate.

    Absolutely well said, Mr Gump.

However, the moral crusaders amongst us actively seek out these things. A thread labelled as potentially offensive is a fine opportunity for them to have a whine about something.

Offence also depends on the recipient. I for example can't run at all or walk too far without discomfort due to an accident that broke both my legs & left me with a limp. I get called Forest Gump in work, is it offensive? Maybe bullying? No? I can take the joke.

The fact that you don't mind and can 'take it' doesn't make it generally acceptable to call people names based on a disability and in most people eyes would constitute bullying.

The fact that the thread title contains a warning is irrelevant.

Racist jokes are wrong, intolerable and unacceptable whether on this forum or anywhere else.

This is rather subjective isn't it? What about 'blonde' jokes then? e.g. 'How many blondes does it take...'. Are they also wrong, intolerable and unacceptable?

The reason I ask whether that's a subjective view is because, if it is, then surely the presence of the thread title was sufficient to allow people to avoid the thread if they wished to?

Are you asking me is it a subjective view that racist jokes are wrong?

    Seriously?

    Put it this way

"Racism is wrong, intolerable and unacceptable"

Now ask me is that a subjective view and see does your question make sense.

Yes, seriously. The fact that people are willing to post 'racist' jokes indicates that people have differing views on the subject. Hence it's subjective. You find it unacceptable, others do not. You'll have to deal with it I'm afraid.

And again, your second statement where you've left off reference to the forum. I'm afraid that's still subjective. Since it's your view.

    I stand by my question.

I'm not sure you entirely understand the word 'subjective', but I'll play along.

    No

It's not a subjective opinion that racism is wrong.

We know this to be true as there are laws to prevent it and to punish racist behaviour.
You'll have to deal with it I'm afraid.

No. You'll have to deal with it. We know this to be true as the moderators have deleted the thread.

Hang on fella, you're changing the goalposts here. I said that your quote 'Racist jokes are wrong, intolerable and unacceptable whether on this forum or anywhere else' was subjective. And it must be since different people have different opinions on whether this statement is true or not (hence the jokes, thereby proving that some people DO think it's acceptable to post racist jokes). You keep changing your statement slightly.

And even then, can you really say that 'It's not a subjective opinion that racism is wrong.'? What you're saying here is that this statement is in no way impacted by personal opinion. Surely you'd admit that there are some people who would disagree?

I don't want to argue about this, but surely on the web we need to see the difference between what is clearly wrong, and what is a matter of personal opinion?

...Polly Toynbee, grauniad waving, righteous indignationists simply wanting to ban free speech and moan about something...

Oi!, I am a grauniad waver and I posted the original thread.

I am sure there are French people who joke about 'Les Rost biff'. I'd love to hear them, I am sure that they would be quite funny or Islamists joking about fat pale faced decadent Westerners.

Some muslim fundamentalists got pretty hairy about a cartoon published in Denmark. The cartoonist got the whole thing wrong as the character was wearing a turban and was a Sikh, not an islamist - their reaction should have been one of amusement on the failings of the cartoonist, instead, he was given death threats and the thing spiralled out of control because a few tw4ts were 'offended'.

In the UK, the depth of unconscious and implied racism is phenominal. In Kenya, I learnt to differentiate between Pakistani Muslims, Sikhs and Christains as well as Indian cultural/religious differences. In the UK, all asians ar refered to as 'Pakis' and all blacks are black despite being from the Caribbean or Western Africa or elsewehere. Sit down and listen to a conversation about Hindus talking about Muslim Pakistani's - an eye opener.
At school I was called a spear chucker, nigger lips and asked silly questions like "Why aren't you black?...did I live in a mud hut?..." etc etc In fact I was and still am refered to as South African, such is the geographical stupidity of many, despite Nairobi being thousands of miles away from Joburg. All these things were offensive to me as a child but as an adult, I realised that this attitude was based on naievity, stereotyping and sheer stupidity.

When we start actually linking a joke to an assumed opinion of the author, that link is fundamentally flawed because at the end of the day, actions speak louder than words.
If you do not act on your words, they mean absolutely nothing. I question the characters of those who are easily offended, its as if they have a god given right to promote themselves to some higher moral status - that is a flaw worse than assumed intolerence.

How would throwing bananas at black footballers fit into your analysis?

You haven't read a word have you ? Throwing bananas at black footballers is an action, it is more than just words. It is intollerable behaviour.
If some one said that they were going to go out and throw bananas at some black footballers but did not do anything, the thought is racist but as there is no action to back up the statement, although you can question the persons verbal intent.

I, as a minority group diabetic, find the term 'fruitcake' deeply offensive, if you had ever had to suffer, or been related to another person, who has been deprived of a functioning pancreas you would not use that term

  • It strikes me that the whole sorry episode is so very typical of t'Internet.....

I've seen interchanges between people on here that are highly unlikely to ever take place in the real world. Frankly some of the cyber-combatants would get their heads kicked in if they behaved that way in person. The old adage about being terribly brave when you don't have to have the "trousers" to back up the "mouth"......

An so my question is this - can we not conceive that whilst some people might post racist/sexist/homophobic/blonde-ist comments in the virtual world, that is unlikely to be their default position in the REAL world - since laws, social mores and the need to exist in a complex multi-layered society prevent them from doing so?

It's a similar argument to the one about pornography, or violent video games - just because you play them doesn't make you a candidate to go out and rape women or shoot people. Mostly.

No they didn't. But you and several others are arguing that racist jokes aren't a form of racism/ racism behaviour. You came up with the frankly ludicrous position that they're not because they're only words. A position which falls apart quite spectacularly when challenged.
