Changing rear cassette on old mountain bike

I have a Marin Bolinas Ridge from the late 90s and I need to replace the rear cassette and chain. As a kid I remember taking a cassette off and a load of ball bearings falling out which was an absolute pig to reassemble. Will my Marin have the more modern all enclosed design that slides onto splines?

changing a cassette is the same now as it always has been.
changing a freewheel is the same as it always has been.
there should never be any loss of balls.
ID what you have and read the how too on Parktools."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
