The energy company EDF has launched a civil claim for £5m in damages against a group of activists who shut down one of its gas-fired power stations in a week-long protest last year.

    I like this quote:
Greenpeace executive director John Sauven said: “It's difficult to imagine how we at Greenpeace could have run our successful campaigns against illegal rainforest timber imports or pirate fishing if every time we took direct action we were landed with a multi-million pound bill.
Were they illegal powerstations? I very much doubt somebody illegally deforesting a rainforest is going to take some protesters to court. It's hardly the same thing.

Fair play to EDF, though not sure how much money they think they're going to get out of a bunch of Eco-hippies :)

Actually jds has hit the nail on the head. This is ( last time I checked) a legit business what payed tax etc. For some airy-fairy organisation to simply disrupt their business and then move on as though they can chalk one up against "globalisation" blah, blah, blah isn't on. They should pay the price. More importantly we may be paying the price, as the business will surely pass their costs on.

whilst we are trotting out the same old tired stereotypes, 'they' were right you commuters are dullards, the French government are trying to stop the right to protest in England, in order to compensate themselves financially, when someone points the finger stop looking at the fcucking finger

Can you imagine the french government trying that one at home?

    Rant over.

No; they usually sink Greenpeace boats moored elsewhere.

Good point. How do you say 'Take that Hippies' in French? :)

  • It's not Greenpeace on the hook, but a tiny protest group with no assets, and the protesters themselves. So EDF's chances of getting anything close to its claim is zero, although I guess it might be able to take assets from any of the activists who own them - a house perhaps, and surely a bike or three.

The only two professional protestors I've ever met (through a friend), had gone to the same private school that he did.
    Stereotypes aside.
21 protestors, 5m = £240k each, but it's also against the dash for gas group which may have other funds.
Quick look through some of the protestors (I've searched for easier names)

I've been campaigning for climate justice since first getting involved with the Camp for Climate Action in January 07. I've been a key member of the site practicalities and police and council liaison working groups for the last two camps at Kingsnorth Power Station and Heathrow Airport, as well as doing a lot of work within the North-West neighbourhood of the Climate Camp. I'm one of 29 people still awaiting trial after occupying a coal train that was heading into Drax power station in June 08.

So generally, they don't want coal, oil, gas or nuclear energy. I presume they therefore want to save our environment by industrialising all of it; damming our rivers, estuaries and lochs, and chucking wind turbines everywhere else.
