Hello :D

As part of my crusade to get more ladies on bikes i'm leading my first 'Breeze' ladies beginner rides tomorrow. I've got all the usual kit I need plus the obvious stuff (first aid kit, inner tubes, ride-specific paperwork etc) but I was pondering what 'extras' I should take, bearing in mind that people will be on all types of bikes. Allen keys I guess as not everyone may have QR's? Inner tubes are inner tubes, right? A pump that does both types of valve.... Jelly Babies obviously

I don't want to ride around with a complete tool kit, but then again some people might be on bikes that have been in the shed for years. Lots of chain oil is another one I guess. What sort of oil for general *getting stuff moving*?

Any thought very welcome!

15mm spanner for the nutted wheels or practice fixing punctures without removing wheels.

Also consider that some might have Woods/Dunlop valves on their inner tubes. the presta fitting on a pump "can" work with these but needs holding in place.

getting hold of an old Skool pump and flexy adaptor for it might be an idea.

But check before you start the ride to see if anyone has that type of valve as if not then leave it in the car.

  • wev recently had a chat in our club about what spares the 'Ride Leaders' (ctc club registered ride leaders) carry, as one of us has to be there for insurance purposes, they are not essential to carrybut handy and means you can fix most trailside issues and get peeps back rolling,
Chain tool, powerlinks - ive 8 and 9speed, other guys have 10sp, multi tool, allen keys (ive been using the par tools one aws-10 for years! fantastic set ofallens!!), tubes (both valve types or presta asthey can fit both types), puncture kit with park patches and the usual bits, cable ties, Duck tape - wrap it around your pump shaft, means you can carry plenty with out it taking up space!!, gear cables, a selection of bolts for around the bike, couple of energy gells and power bars, and some tubeless goo - i run tubeless so is essentially for me! ive also a std common mech hanger as its a spare fro an old bike (no 25/H), but an emergency hanger is great for gettig them back to te carpark without single speeding them!!

if youve no idea what types of bikes are coming then id bung in an 8mm, 10mm 13mm, 15mm and 17mm spanner in the car too, just incase, sokme basic rear mechs have an 8mm bolt for the cable, dont need to carry them but if there in the car youve got them!!

All of my spares are fitted into a saddle bag, so i know where they all are and they dont take up too much space!!!

Fire road stuff - it's a beginner ride, 'off road' but not mountain biking as such.

I know I can't cater for all eventualities, but I would like to be a bit prepared. As such I'm driving to the start as opposed to riding so I can take a track pump etc.

Some great tips so far - thank you!

I'd have a look on the SMBLA or TCL courses, they've got a pretty exhaustive kit list which will be overkill for you but might give you some good ideas.

8 and 9 speed powerlinks and a short length (4 double links) of each chain in case one gets mashed.

9mm spanner for cable clamps on cheaper bikes.

Self adhesive patches are a speed godsend.

I see where you're going there Waylander...:lol:

Lostboysaint - still a very unhappy knee :( Tomorrow's ride is only 8 miles and it'll be a slow sociable pootle, so I figure I can just take lots of ibruprofen and spin through that. Beyond that I really have no idea! I've cancelled a trip to Wales on Sunday which i'm GUTTED about, and I guess if it's still bad next week i'll book to go and see a physio (preferably one that understand about cycling-specific injuries). No idea why it happened though which is even more annoying

Well, my first ride went really well - 6 of us in total braved the cold (and snow!). No mechanicals, no off's or collisions and everyone enjoyed themselves. Job done :-)

    Thanks for all the advice!
