Roma Maxima

For the second time recently RCS Sports has changed a race name. First, the Giro del Lombardia became Il Lombardia. Now the Giro del Lazio becomes the Roma Maxima. Me, I like the traditional names.

The 2013 Roma Maxima (ex-Giro del Lazio) will be held March 3. The 180 km race will start at the Fori Imperiali of Rome after which the riders will face the climbs of Rocca Massima, Rocca Priora and Campi di Annibale, and also a few km of the Appia Antica before arriving at the finish in Via dei Fori Imperiali. Should make for stunning photography of a bike race.

The sixteen invited teams are:
AG2R LA MONDIALE
ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI
ASTANA PRO TEAM
BARDIANI VALVOLE-CSF INOX
BMC RACING TEAM
CANNONDALE PRO CYCLING
CAJA RURAL
COLOMBIA
CRELAN-EUPHONY
IAM CYCLING
KATUSHA
LAMPRE-MERIDA
MOVISTAR TEAM
TEAM ARGOS-SHIMANO
VACANSOLEIL-DCM PRO CYCLING TEAM
VINI FANTINI-SELLE ITALIA

Think it might be on the 2nd, not the 3rd, since that's supposed to be Strade Bianche day.

“The day of the race is immediately after the Strade Bianche, a race also organized by RCS Sport. The aim is to make an incredible weekend of cycling in some of the most amazing scenery in the world, unifying ‘Chiantishire’, Siena and all the beauty of Rome in a unique surrounding for the global sport. By giving new life to this race we also feel we have given a positive signal to the Italian cycling world that, we hope, will show faith and a breath of fresh air.”

Never heard of this race. Hopefully we get visuals (even small races in Italy get coverage) and some good photos.

If they are racing over some paths like in that photo - will be interesting!

I like it that Sky were not invited.
    Contador is the Greatest
  • The name 'Roma Maxima' was the result of an online competition where 140 proposals were submitted from 22 different countries, according to RCS Sport.

"The name 'Roma Maxima' shows the magnificence of Rome and the image of the city to the world, reflecting values that are easily recognised abroad from the cycling community and beyond," said a press statement.

Indeed, you seem to know about this than the UCI.
I was quoting their "official" (and often inaccurate) calendar.
Cyclingfever have the SB on the 2nd and Lazio on the 3rd.

Certainly given old Eurosport a headache. Their schedules have both days showing live cycling. (but not Paris-Nice)

Sorry to disappoint but that's not the case according to Michele Acquarone's twitter feed this morning:

'To be clear. We invited all the first division teams that asked to ride our 2013 races.'
