I may be very silly but how do I download a route from Garmin connect and save it as a GPX file? I then want to share it with riders who use Bryton Roder 50. I have been playing around on the Garmin Connect site and just dont seem able to find a way of downloading and saving to a pc a GPX file. I am on a MAC if that makes any difference?

Help please!

Go to dashboard view and select the ride you want to share.
Then below the mini map, select 'view details', which gives you all the detailed ride stats.
You can either 'export' 'save as course' or 'send to device' (from the menu bar above the map.

When you click export you get a choice of file type. Select GPX. It downloads automatically.

For my Garmin 500, if I want to follow the breadcrumb, I 'save as course' and then send to device. It automatically puts it in the courses folder as a *.fit file to follow.

    Simples
  • Is it possible to create a .gpx file from a course I have created in GC, but not ridden yet? I dont have a garmin device to send it to. Ultimately I would like to follow the route on my iPhone. I guess this is what Garmin is trying to stop, and are trying to get people to buy their devices. But hey, they cant have it all their way!
    Thanks for any tips!

I think what you want to do is quite odd.

Most people create courses in mapmyride or bikeroutetoaster which allows them to be saved into gpx format.
  • Really? I find GC route creator easy to use, easier than GPSies for example. All I was asking was is it possible to export from GC without a Garmin device. That's odd is it?
Thanks for your help any way..

Only way that I have found is to send it to the device and then copy the file off the device onto the computer - I think that I also need to run it through TCX convertor (freeware) to get it in a format that BikeHike likes.

Main reason that I have done it is to look at someone else's course I have found on Garmin Connect in a proper route editor. Having said that, if staying on road, Garmin Connect route planning isnt that bad - not many features but easy to use.

    Some other good ones:

Bike Hike - http://www.bikehike.co.uk/ (completely free)
MapMyRide - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/create/ (very good, can use openstreetmap, which has cycle paths, but nags to go premium a lot)
BikeRouteToaster - http://bikeroutetoaster.com/ (free but need to register to load and save)
Ride with GPS - http://ridewithgps.com/ (ok but not my first choice)

On a side note, does anyone have trouble using any of the map services (including Garmin) to get turn by turn directions? The only one that seems to work for me is BikeHike, saving as a route instead of a course. Of course I know that turn by turn needs activating for each route on the device but a few times now I haven't had directions. Even courses plotted in Garmin, I tend to upload to BikeHike and re-save just to be sure.
