Well I'm tackling a bottle of havana club 7 currently, not normally a midweek spirit drinker I'm partial to my ales mind but going through yet another relationship break-up, anyway enough of that..

I'm looking like finishing this bottle shortly and looking forward to the commute
So to my question, are there any other reasnably priced quality rums i should know about?
I feel an order for the weekend is required!

Tried a few mind but, always end up going back to Mt.Gay & havana7, kraken is okay and morgans spiced is for mixing imho. No white kak and always end up with green tongue after dark/navy rum session, so what should i order?

Try Appletons. Not too bad and quite reasonably priced.

Tesco do a nice red rum apparently.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I used to live with a Jamaican and the local pub was a Jamaican pub.

The stable for them is Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum (the flagship brand, 63% ABV),

They like it with just a dash of blackcurrant cordial, its nice, very drinkable but dangerously potent

    Strange that.
In a similar fashion, I was gobsmacked at the amount of Irish pubs in Ireland.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Mount Gay Extra Old is the best Caribbean rum IMHO. Drink it as if its a fine Scotch.

    Bacardi

Or still cheap mass produced stuff but I had some Sailor Jerry the other week and was quite nice, made me feel like a young Hunter S Thompson.

Havana Club, Appleton's, Mount Gay or Bundaberg for me. The Angostura stuff is supposed to be good, but haven't tried it yet.

I did try the Bacardi Oakheart a while back, but it was like drinking air freshener. Avoid.

I'm assuming you mean the 15 year-old but yes. They had it in (don't laugh) Aldi just before Christmas, still £35 a bottle, but few Rums even come close.

Personally, I'd prefer a nice single-malt, but there you go.

I've tried the 21 year-old Eldorado and it was fantastic, would love to get my hands on a bottle of the 25...

Currently ploughing my way through a bottle of Chairman's Reserve that was brought back from the Caribbean for me which is very tasty for something also available in Waitrose. Also great in ginger based cocktails.

For just drinking, I'm a big fan of the Flor de Cana Centenario from Nicaragua, if you haven't tried it and enjoy rum then go and find a bottle.
  • Gosling's from Bermuda is very nice. The dark is best used in dark and stormies, but they do a golden rum that is nice and smooth.

    +1

Or, if you like your spiced rum,

Admiral Vernon's Old J (Dark rum sweetened with Vanilla, lime and spiced)

It's the old Sailor jerry recipe from before Jerrys got too popular. It's the smoothest rum I've ever had!

  • Having a rum obsessed ex Navy father (I think there are more than 25 different rums in parents house) I can recommend the Whiskey Exchange http://www.thewhiskeyexchange.com as most birthday/Xmas pressies involve a bit of shopping from here for him (and now the husband after my father has passed on the rum obsession). There is always Rumfest http://rumfest.co.uk/ to go and try them all out too.

Husband has just managed to drink a bottle of El Dorado 12yo like it was water but I know he is also after a bottle of Captain Morgans Private Stock as thats his favourite. Father has just discovered Captain Morgans Black and recommends that one.

Chairmans Reserve are usually good basic rums for either mixing or supping.

If you feel like a treat Ron Zacapa is always a favourite of my Dads.

He's always most disapointed that I still add coke to my rum, the good stuff is just wasted on me

Had some of this a few years ago in a Cuban bar in Chester. Very nice, not one for the purists though.

+1 for Guyanese El Dorado. Mind you, I'm biased. ;) (Guyanese father, and used to live there.)
