Hi guys,

I wanted to introduce myself. I’ve signed up here on behalf of Action Challenge, an event’s organiser that has been running and developing cycling events among others for many years.

I want to be straight and honest with you guys. I want to let you know that I’m not just some fat marketing guy sat at my computer who doesn't know the difference between Shimano and SRAM. I am genuinely called Jamie, and used to lurk around here many moons ago when I first started riding.

I started out years ago riding mountain bikes and was a frequent poster on the old MBUK forums before they became ‘Bike Radar’. I remember spending far too much of my money buying shiny bikes and parts (a Specialized SX built from components was my pride and joy), and discussing the merits of various types of cake with some of the Cwmcarm riders in the ‘Sandbox’. (You know who you are!) I've seen a few usernames I recognise but looks like many may have moved on. :(

Now, I use road cycling as a good training method and to get me to work on time. While cycling in London for the commute isn’t the height of enjoyment, it beats the underground!

I’m here not only to answer any questions you guys have about Action Challenge events, but also to try and get back into cycling. I’ve had the itch developing for a while now and tried to scratch it with various YouTube videos (New World Disorder 6 and ROAM for you mountain bikers), but to no avail! So, back to the good ol’ forums it is!

Cheers,
Jamie.

Seeing as there's no 'Introductions' section like there used to be, it went in here!

    Cheers,

    Jamie (does do smiles)

    :D Genuinely....

Action Challenge is an events organiser. I don't want to spout their entire history but a brief synopsis.

They started by offering bespoke trips to places like Kilimanjaro. Over the years the company has grown, as has it's staff! Now they organise several big UK events each year, a few overseas trips, and plenty of Kilimanjaro climbs still. All these events support charities, so we effectively act as outsourced event departments for them, saving them the cost of developing and organising these trips themselves.

I started with AC when I went mountain climbing in Africa with a completely different company nine months ago; and the tour guide I went with thought I had potential to be a mountain leader. He said he'd get me a one-time job as a thank-you for helping him out when one of our team got injured near the summit. The one-time job happened to be helping on a bespoke cycle ride across Britain run by Action Challenge. After working freelance for them on a few more occasions, here I am!

Best bet is to have a look around the website if you're interested: http://www.actionchallenge.co.uk I don't want to come across as a salesperson because I know they always start a witch hunt on forums.

Like I said, the main reason I'm here is to scratch my itch again.

I've been away for about three/four years at a guess. I remember Slopestyle was just coming in and everyone seemed to be buying medium (140-160mm) travel AM bikes. I vaguely remember full-sus DJ bikes with 100mm at each end, and Hope were being nudged off the top stop in the stopping department. What's changed?

Are action challenge the guys doing them hair brained 300 mile 24hr road rides from Newcastle/Manchester to London?

    Barking :p

That's us! There's a 250mile one from Manchester to London, and a 300mile one from Newcastle. 40-45 mile stages are going to be a killer!

I rode on a 930 mile endurance ride over some horrible hills last year, and I'd still consider our 24hr challenges a real test!

Oddly enough though there must be some nutters like us out there as people are signing up!

  • Hello Jamie,

Maybe have a chat with Duncan at Huckleberry Foundation: http://www.huckleberrygroup.org/huckleb ... -home.html. Here is what they're about: http://www.charitiesdirect.com/charitie ... 44256.html

He organised this last year: http://bigsocietyrelay.org/ which involved teams doing 12 iron man distance events in 12 consecutive days. Duncan and his brother completed the full 12 ironmans in the 12 days - impressive!

I believe he is keen to make it an annual event and there may be scope to make some of the ironman events cross country as well, which would be good craic on MTB or Cyclocross.

The idea was that teams completed multiples of 2012 somethings between them last year.

    Anyway, over to you.

Thanks for that! Definitely sounds like a tough event! Something tells me that while each one is split up, the event as a whole would be much tougher than a deco-Ironman! I'll have a look through and see if something could be organised between the two of us. Once again, cheers for the 'heads up'
