Angled stem base

Hello,

A friend is building a bike, he has assembled an array of parts and I went round to help but we found a problem.

The bottom of the stem does not sit flush on the spacers.

I've an old specialised stem that has an insert in, and the insert was angled at the bottom, so the stem sat on it and was flush with the spacers, so I brought that around but the insert didn't fit between the stem and fork steerer tube. The only thing I can think of to make it work is to sand a washer to an angle for underneath. The stem looked old and had no markings on it.

Any one else come across this?

Thanks

My first roadie had a really cheap crappy stem that wasn't flat - maybe it's just a bit crap.

If your friend doesn't want to replace it you'd do better to dress the stem flat instead of trying to fit a shaped washer.

  • I believe those stems are meant to be fitted a certain way, without spacers above, and with the matching top cap. See if you can find the documentation for "Specialized multi stem".
