Knowing when to change tyres

May sound a dumb question but at what stage would you replace your tyres?

Obviously there is minimal tread on road tyres, and the centre 20% runs smooth relatively quickly, but at what stage will my tyres be risky to use anymore?

How many miles do you get out of a tyre?

    for simple wear, change when...

    the wear indicators have gone, assuming there were any
    the carcass is showing
    puncture rate gets too high
    my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

    Depends. If it's a winter tyre, I'd be more cautious. You don't want to end up on your ass because you were on that 'slightly' worn patch of the tyre.

    In the summer, it's more forgiving, there's more grip.

    I last replaced mine when the thread was largely(0.5-1cm) worn in places and you could see the second layer underneath.

    On avg, mine last 3000-4000 miles. I use continentals.

    Dont think there is any legal thingy but I just change mine when they're generally fecked up.

    normally when the tyres look too cut up/knackered.

    I replaced my rear tyre just after the council did their half-arsed tar and chippings resurfacing stunt in September. It was already 5 years old and fairly well worn, but the chippings shredded what was left of the tread and peeled it down to the carcase :shock:

    Still didn't puncture though; good old 4 Seasons!
