just been to the dentist because of a problematic tooth

said tooth had a root canal ages ago....she took xrays an said its infected at the base of the tooth

she said 3 options

1. remove it - no way jose!!

2. another root canal - could an most possibly will fail (according to dentist)

3. do a Apicoectomy - basically cut away under the tooth to access the root of the tooth an start cutting infection away including bone an root tip

im kinda worried, i don't mind surgical stuff, but not on my mouth where i cant see

anyone ever had a apicoectomy

Why not have it removed? Unless its a front one.

Just had a root canal a couple of weeks ago. Still had a bit of pain about a week afterwards, she gave me a course of antibiotics which has fixed it. Hope it stays that way!!!

Mid infection, when I couldn't sleep properly and had pain all day, if someone had offered to remove the tooth as a fix I think I would have jumped at the chance.

If anyone is dental phobic I don't recommend clicking on Mudcow's link. I lasted all of three seconds.

I'm double dosing with a bottle of oil of cloves and a bag of mini-eggs at the moment as an avoidance tactic because I know I need stuff doing. Terrified of dentists.

I just use an expensive dentist who uses all my money to buy the latest kit. The worst suffering I normally get is at the hands of the dental hygenist (but she's attractive so I don't tend to mind so much  ) and that's despite having had a root canal jobbie some years ago.

yep im a private patient too, but i think the dentist he did the first just mustn't have gotten all the "bad stuff" out of the tooth the first time around

    really dreading it....

An old school friend is a dentist now so that makes me even more qualified to advise.

My dad is a dentist so I must count as pretty much qualified.

Have the tooth out and replaced with a bridge.

Your dentist will like his new Cervelo.

That too. He'll look like old man Steptoe.
  • My wife was a Dental Nurse. I remeber we were out one night years back and my friend had has his done, on arrival my wife shouted accross the room (innocently) "how did the apicoectomy go? show the stitches?" it didnt sound like she said "apicoectomy" to those not in the know lol.

Its very very likely that the second root canal will fail so is just a waste of money. a rear tooth I would say have out, a front tooth you want to keep as long as posible, denches arent cheap and in any case are replacements for holes not teath (they dont work very well for eating), and bridges cost a bomb and need replacing. Apicoectomy is looking like the way to go.

If you are considering either root canal retreatment or an apicectomy then I would request a referral to a specialist

dentists, cycling, Pinarello, it was all too easy. Just wish I'd got there first.

There are probably more Pinarello owners in the road section if you need some advice from a proper dentist
  • I'm in the same situation except its my first molar, which happens to be next to another molar that's already been had - I have elected to have the tooth out. Had too much pain in years gone past from abyss' - not going through that again for anything!

I shall just have to put up with the "gappy" nickname I'm sure ill get.
